Earflap Hat

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

18 sts + 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k every round). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit)

HAT

Cast on 88 (96,104) sts, divide sts evenly across needles. Mark beg of rnd. Work 8 rounds Garter St (k one round, p the next). Change to Stockinette St and work 0 (0, 2) rows even. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 84 (92, 100) sts. Work 4 rows even. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 80 (88, 96) sts. Work 3 rows even.

Repeat last 4 rows 2 times more – 72 (80, 88) sts. Dec 4 sts evenly spaced around – 68 (76, 84) sts. Work 2 rows even. Repeat last 3 rows once more – 64 (72, 80) sts. Dec 4 sts evenly spaced around – 60 (68, 76) sts. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows 6 (8, 10) times more – 36 sts. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 32 sts. Repeat last row 5 times more – 12 sts. Decrease 3 sts evenly spaced around – 9 sts.
Repeat last row once more – 6 sts. Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail. Pull tail through remaining sts.

EARFLAPS

With RS facing, pick up and knit 13 (15, 17) sts along cast-on edge.

Next Row Ssk, k across. Repeat last row until 1 st rem. Fasten off. Skip 40 (43, 45) sts across front and repeat instructions above for 2nd earflap. With crochet hook, work 1 round of sc around entire edge.

TASSELS

Cut 6 strands of yarn 15" long. Pull strands through point of earflap, meeting ends, tie overhand knot. Divide strands into 3 even groups and braid groups to desired length. Tie overhand knot. Trim ends.

Earflap Hat Reviewed by K on 2011-12-12 *
Should have realized that it wasn't a good sign when there wasn't a picture of the knit version. Knit version only approximates this photo and sizing was odd - adult size much too big, but tween size too small for anyone but an elf.
