Checked Country Sweater

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

20 sts and 26 rows = 4" in Textured Rib Pat with size 7 needles.
22 sts and 39 rows = 4" in Check Pat with size 7 needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

STITCH ABBREVIATION

ssk = slip, slip, knit: Slip the next 2 sts knitwise, one at a time, from the tip of the left-hand needle to the tip of the right-hand needle; insert the left-hand needle into the fronts of these 2 stitches from the left and knit them tog from this position.

CHECK PAT (multiple of 4 sts + 2):
Row 1 (WS):
With B, purl.
Row 2: With A, k 1, sl 1 wyib (with yarn in back), *k 2, sl 2 wyib; rep from * across, end k 2, sl 1 wyib, k 1.
Row 3: With A, p 1, sl 1 wyif (with yarn in front), *p 2, sl 2 wyif; rep from * across, end p 2, sl 1 wyif, p 1.
Row 4: With B, knit.
Row 5: With C, p 2, *sl 2 wyif, p 2; rep from * across.
Row 6: With C, k 2, *sl 2 wyib, k 2; rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1-6 for Check Pat.

TEXTURED RIB PAT (multiple of 4 sts + 2):
RS Rows:
K 2, *p 2, k 2; rep from * across.
WS Rows: Purl.

NOTES:

Seam sts are included in the amount of sts given.

PULLOVER

BACK:

With size 5 needles and A, cast on 106 (110, 114) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 2½", end WS. Knit 2 rows. Do not cut A; attach B. With B, k 2 rows inc 8 sts evenly spaced across first row -- 114 (118, 122) sts. Change to size 7 needles. Work Check Pat Rows 2-6 once, then rep Check Pat Rows 1-6 until piece measures approx 15 (15, 16)" from beg, ending with Pat Row 3. Fasten off C. With B, knit 2 rows. Fasten off B. With A, knit 2 rows dec 8 sts evenly spaced across first row -- 106 (110, 114) sts. Continue with A in Textured Rib Pat until piece measures 26 (26, 27)" from beg. Bind off all sts.

FRONT:

Work same as back until piece measures 18 (18, 19)" from beg, end WS. Shape neck: Next row: Keeping to pat, work 51 (53, 55) sts, k2tog; attach 2nd ball of yarn, ssk, work rem 51 (53, 55) sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, continue to dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row until 36 (38, 40) sts rem each side. Work even until same length as back to shoulders. Bind off rem sts each side.

SLEEVES:

With size 5 needles and A, cast on 54 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 2½", end WS. Knit 2 rows, inc 4 sts evenly spaced across first row -- 58 sts. Change to size 7 needles. Work in Textured Rib Pat; AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st at each side (working incs sts into pat) alternately on every 4th, then 3rd row until there are 106 (110, 114) sts. Work even in Textured Rib Pat until piece measures 19" from beg or desired length. Bind off.

SHAWL COLLAR:
With size 5 needles and A, cast on 35 sts.
Row 1:
Work in k 1, p 1 rib.
Next row:
Cast on 4 sts at beg of row; maintaining rib pat, work these 4 sts, then complete row. Rep this row until there are 123 sts. Then, dec 1 st at each end of every other row 6 times to shape sides edges that overlap at base of V-neck. Bind off loosely in rib.

FINISHING:

Sew shoulder seams. Sew cast-on edge of collar to neck edge overlapping the shaped side edges at point at V. Sew side edges to opposite sides of the V. Sew top edge of sleeves to front and back easing slightly. Sew sleeve and side seams.
