Striped Cap

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

18 sts + 24 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Wide Stripe Version: *10 rows B; 10 rows C; 10 rows A; repeat from *.
Narrow Stripe Version: *2 rows B; 2 rows C; 2 rows A; repeat from *.

CAP

With A, cast on 68 (79, 90, 101) sts.

Beg with a purl row, work 12 rows in St st. Work Stripe Sequence in St st until piece measures 6 (6½, 7, 8) inches [15 (16.5, 18, 20.5) cm] from beg, or 1½ (1¾, 2, 2½) inches [4 (4.5, 5, 6.5) cm] less than desired length, ending with a WS row.

Shape Crown

Note Continue in Stripe Sequence.

Row 1 (RS) K 1, *k 4 (5, 6, 7), k2tog; repeat from * to last st, k 1 – 57 (68, 79, 90) sts.

Row 2 and all WS rows Purl.

Row 3 K 1, *k 3 (4, 5, 6), k2tog; repeat from * to last st, k 1 – 46 (57, 68, 79) sts.

Row 5 K 1, *k 2 (3, 4, 5), k2tog; repeat from * to last st, k 1 – 35 (46, 57, 68) sts.

Row 7 K 1, *k 1 (2, 3, 4), k2tog; repeat from * to last st, k 1 – 24 (35, 46, 57) sts.

Continue in this manner, working 1 less st before each k2tog, until 13 sts remain. Cut yarn, leaving an 18 inches [45.5 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, and fasten off securely. Sew back seam. Weave in ends.

I love quick, easy knits, such a nice change from lace patterns. I made this cap in a non-striped homespun yarn and it was gorgeous. Since it was for my granddaughter I also added the flower from another LB pattern. The hat was so easy, fit well, she loves it, it is warm and washable. A win!!
