GAUGE:

8 sts and 12 rows = 4" in St st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3-needle bind off: With RS together, hold in one hand 2 dpns or straight needles with equal number of sts on each. With third dpn or spare straight needle (k 1 st from front needle and 1 st from back needle together) twice, *pass first st over second to bind off, k next st on both needles together; rep from * until all sts are bound-off.

NOTES:

For ease of working, circular needles may be used for larger pieces,working back-and-forth unless otherwise indicated.

Bottom Half:
First Leg: With straight knitting needles and B, cast on 16 (18, 20) sts. K 1 row. Change to A. Work in St st until piece measures 5 (6, 8)" from color B, ending with a WS row. Place sts on holder.
Second Leg: Work same as First Leg.

Join legs:
Next row (RS): K across First Leg inc 1 st in first and last st; k across Second Leg inc 1 st in first and last st -- 36 (40, 44) sts.P 1 row.
Inc row (RS): K, inc 10 sts evenly spaced -- 46 (50, 54) sts. Cont in St st for 5 (5, 7) more rows, dec 1 st at beg and end of last row -- 44 (48, 52) sts. Cont in St st until piece measures8 (9, 10)" from leg joining, ending with a WS row.

Divide for armholes:
Next row (RS): K 33 (36, 39) sts, turn, work back across last 22 (24, 26) sts worked. Place 11 (12, 13) sts for left and right fronts on separate holders. Cont in St st on 22 (24, 26) back sts until piece measures 6 (6, 7)" from dividing for armholes. Place back sts on holder.

Right front: Place right front sts on straight needles, join yarn and cont in St st until piece measures 4½ (4½, 5½)" from dividing row for armholes, ending with a WS row.

Shape neck:
Next row (RS): K 3 sts and place on holder, k to end of row. Work 1 row even. Next row (RS): K2tog, k to end of row. Work 1 row even.
Next row (RS): Work 3-needle bind off on 7 (8, 9) sts of right front and back shoulders.

Left front: Work to correspond to right front, rev shaping.

HOOD:
With RS facing, using straight or circular needles and A, pick up 28 (30, 32) sts, including 3 sts from holders at right and left center front neck edges.
Note: If using circular needles, do not join but work back and forth. P 1 row.
Next row (RS): K, inc 1 st (0 sts, dec 1 st) at each shoulder seam and 1 st at center back -- 30 sts.  Cont in St st for 5 (6, 6)", ending with a WS row.

Next row (RS):  K 13, (k2tog) twice, k 13 -- 28 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: K 12, (k2tog) twice, k 12 -- 26 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: K 11, (k2tog) twice, k 11 -- 24 sts. P 1 row. Work 3-needle bind off across top of hood seam.

SLEEVES:

With straight knitting needles and B, cast on 14 sts. K 1 row. Change to A and cont in St st; AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st at each edge every 3 rows 5 (6, 7) times -- 24 (26, 28) sts. Cont even in St st until piece measures 5 (6, 8)" from color B. Bind off. Paws: With RS facing, using straight needles and B, pick up 12 sts around lower edge of sleeve. Change to A. Work in St st for 5 (5, 7) rows dec 2 sts evenly across last row -- 10 sts. Work 1 row even. Dec 2 sts evenly across next row -- 8 sts. Fold paw in half with RS together and work 3-needle bind off across 8 paw sts. Sew Sleeve and paw seam leaving an opening at upper edge of paw to expose hand. Sew sleeves into armholes.

FINISHING:

Sew leg inseam and lower front center seam to dec sts for trim insertion. Mark center front for 4 buttons evenly spaced. Center front opening trim: With RS facing, using circular needles and B, beg at end of center front seam, pick up 2 sts for every 3 rows evenly along right center front, around hood and along left center front. Do not join. K 1 row. Next row (RS): K 1 row, working (yo, k2tog) buttonholes to correspond to button positions. K 1 more row. Bind off. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. (Note: Trim can be worked in two pieces from lower right front to center hood; and from center hood to lower left front, if desired. Then steam center hood neatly.) Foot: Note: Heel flap is worked back and forth in garter st, balance of foot is worked in-the-rnd in St st (k every rnd). Heel flap: With RS facing, using straight knitting needles and B, pick up and k 8 sts from back half of lower leg for heel flap. K 4 rows. Dec for heel: (K 1, k2tog, k 1) twice -- 6 sts. K 1 row. Next row: Switch to dpns and k across 6 heel flap sts, pick up 4 sts along side of heel flap (heel gusset), pick up 10 sts along front lower edge of leg for instep, pick up k sts along other side of heel flap (heel gusset) -- 24 sts. Join. K 1 rnd. Dec rnd: K 6 heel flap sts, (k 2, k2tog) at heel gusset, k across 10 instep sts, (k2tog, k 2) at heel gusset -- 22 sts. K 1 rnd even. Dec rnd: K 6 heel flap sts, (k 2, k2tog), k 8 instep sts, (k2tog, k 2) -- 20 sts. K 1 rnd even.

Dec rnd: K 6 heel flap sts, (k 2, k2tog), k 6 instep sts, (k2tog, k 2) -- 18 sts. K 2 (4, 5) more rnds. Dec for toe shaping: K2tog twice, k 5, k2tog twice, k 5 -- 14 sts. K 1 rnd even. Dec rnd: K2tog twice, k 3, k2tog twice, k 3 -- 10 sts. Turn inside out and work 3-needle bind off across 10 sts. Ears: Outer left ear: With RS facing, using straight knitting needles and A, pick up 7 sts at left of center of hood in desired position for ear. Work in garter st for 10 rows. Cont in garter st, dec 1 st at each edge every 4th row 3 times. Bind off rem st. Inner left ear: With straight knitting needles and B, cast on 5 sts. Work in garter st for 6 rows. Cont in garter st, dec 1 st at each edge every 4th row twice. Bind off rem st. Sew inner ear to outer ear as pictured. Outer right ear: With RS facing, using straight knitting needles and A, pick up 7 sts at right of center of hood to correspond to left ear. Complete same
