GAUGE:

8 sts and 12 rows = 4 inches in St st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

3-needle bind off: Put half of sts on spare needle, place 2 needles holding sts together, right sides together (wrong side will face out). Knit together one st from each needle, *knit together one st from each needle, pass first st worked over second to bind off*; rep from * to * across to last st. Cut working yarn and pull through last st to secure.

BACK:
Cast on 22 (26, 28, 30) sts. Knit 4 rows (2 garter ridges). Continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 10 (12, 13, 15)" from beg. Put sts on holder.

LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 12 (14, 15, 16) sts. Knit 4 rows (2 garter ridges). Row 5 (RS): K. Row 6 (WS): K 3, p 9 (11, 12, 13).
Rep Rows 5 and 6 until piece measures 8 (10, 11, 13)" from beg, ending with a RS row. Next row (WS): Bind
off 3 (4, 4, 4) sts at neck edge. Work one row even. Next row (WS): Bind off 2 sts at neck edge. Dec 1 st
at neck edge on next RS row. Work even until piece measures same as Back. Place sts on holder.

RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 12 (14, 15, 16) sts. Knit 4 rows (2 garter ridges). Row 5 (RS): K. Row 6 (WS): P 9 (11, 12, 13), k 3. Rep Rows 5 and 6 until piece measures 8 (10, 11, 13)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Next row (RS): Bind off 3 (4, 4, 4) sts at neck edge. Work one row even. Next row (RS): Bind off 2 sts at neck edge. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next RS row. Work even until piece measures same as Back. Place sts on holder.

Joining shoulders:
With Back sts on spare needle, place right sides together (wrong sides facing out) and work 3-needle bind off across 6 (7, 8, 9) shoulder sts; bind off across 10 (12, 12, 12) Back neck sts; work 3-needle bind off across other 6 (7, 8, 9) shoulder sts.

NOTE:
Check to make sure shoulder seams have been joined properly.

HOOD:
With RS facing, pick up and k 24 (26, 26, 26) sts around neck. Next row (WS): Knit. Next row (RS):
K, inc 6 (6, 6, 8) sts evenly spaced across row -- 30 (32, 32, 34) sts. Work in garter st (= k every row) until hood
measures 7 (7½, 8, 8½)" from picked-up edge. Place half of hood sts on spare needle and with right sides
together (wrong sides facing out), work 3-needle bind off across these sts, thus seaming top of hood.

SLEEVES:
With pins, mark 4 (4½, 5, 5)" down from shoulder bind off on Front and Back of sweater. With RS facing, pick
up and k 16 (18, 20, 20) sts between these markers. Work in garter st for 3". Dec row: K2tog at beg and
end of row. Continue in garter st until 6" from beg. For sizes 18 months and 3T: Rep dec row once.
All SIZE Continue in garter st, if necessary, until Sleeve measures 6 (7, 8, 9)" from picked-up edge.
Bind off all sts.

FINISHING:
Sew Sleeve seams with flat seam. Sew side seams. Weave in ends. If desired, sew buttons at neck edge
and approx 3" from neck edge.

NOTE:
Buttons can be fastened through loosely knit garter st bands. If buttonholes are desired, work Left Front first.
Mark placement for buttons on Left Front, counting number of ridges between markers. On Right Front,
work buttonholes to correspond to markers, as foll:

RS row: K 1, yo, k2tog, k to end of row.
