8 sts and 13 rows = 4" on size 13 needles in St st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Knit Hooded Baby Poncho Reviewed by Blima Pilchick on 2009-06-22 *****
This is a wonderful pattern. Last summer I knitted it for my grand-daughter. As a finishing touch, I crocheted around the hood and around the rest of the poncho, white fun fur. I knitted the poncho in white and the fun fur was white as well. It came out beautiful. This summer I will knit it in a soft pale yellow with white fun fur trim for my great niece. Thank you
