Rib Knit Hat & Scarf
Lion Brand® Magic Stripes
GAUGE: 24 sts + 32 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k every st in the round; k on RS, p on WS when knitting flat).
32 sts + 32 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Rib Stitch Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Rib Stitch Pattern
Rows 1 - 4 *K 1, P 1; rep from *.
Rows 5 - 8 *P 1, k 1; rep from *.
Repeat Rows 1 - 8 for pattern.
ssk (slip, slip, knit)
1. Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle.
2. Insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

HAT
Cast on 48 sts. Work in Rib Stitch Pattern for 20" . Bind off all sts. Sew cast on edge to bound off edge, reversing seam halfway for turned up cuff. With circular needles, pick up 120 sts evenly around edge of cuff. Place marker and join. Work even in St st for 1½".Crown shaping
Round 1 *K 13, ssk; rep from * around 112 sts.
Round 2 and all even rounds Knit.
Round 3 *K 12, ssk; rep from * around 104 sts.
Round 5 *K11, ssk; rep from * around 96 sts.
Round 7 *K10, ssk; rep from * around 88 sts.
Continue in this way, decreasing 8 sts every other round, changing to double-pointed needles when necessary, until
8 sts rem. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. With a large-eyed, blunt needle, run tail through remaining sts twice and draw up tightly. Weave in loose ends. SCARF
Cast on 48 sts. Work in Rib Stitch Pattern for 60" or to desired length. Bind off all sts
