24 sts + 32 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st (knit every round). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

Cast on 32 sts and divide onto 3 needles, with 8 sts on first needle, 16 sts on 2nd needle, and 8 sts on 3rd needle. Join, being careful not to twist.

Work even in St st until piece measures 20 inches from cast on edge.

Work decrease rnd as follows: Needle #1 Knit to last 2 sts, ssk; Needle #2 K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, ssk; Needle #3 K2tog, knit to end – 28 sts.

Next Rnd Knit.

Next Rnd Repeat decrease rnd – 24 sts.

Work even in St st until piece measures 56 inches from cast on edge.

Bind off all sts.

Flatten Tie and neatly sew cast on edges together.

Sew bound off edges together.

Striped Necktie Reviewed by SHERYL TITONE on 2010-10-14 *****
I made this tie & had a problem sewing the cast on edge closed because it's impossible to turn the tie inside out. The second tie I made, I knit 2" after the cast on edge, then turned it inside out, sewed the end closed, turned the tie right side out again & continued knitting. Worked out great this way.
