Knitted Light & Breezy Cardigan

Lion Brand® Microspun

GAUGE:

5 sts = 1"; 34 row pat rep = 4¾" in Body Pat with size 7 needles.
15 sts = 3½" in Sleeve and Collar Pat with size 7 needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

BORDER PATTERN (Seed st):
Row 1:
K 1, *p 1, k 1; rep from *.
Rep Row 1 for Seed St.

BODY PAT (multiple of 3 sts plus 2):
Rows 1, 3 and 5 (RS):
Knit.
Rows 2 and 4: Purl.
Row 6 (WS): Knit.
Row 7: K 1, *k 1 wrapping yarn around needle two times; rep from * across, end k 1.
Row 8: K 1, *sl 3 sts purlwise to right-hand needle dropping extra loops, pass these 3 sts back to left-hand needle, (k 1, p 1, k 1) through these 3 sts tog; rep from * across, end k 1.
Rows 9 and 10: Knit.
Rows 11-34: Rep Rows 1-6, four times.
Rep Rows 1-34 for Body Pat.

SLEEVE AND COLLAR PATTERN (multiple of 2 sts plus 1):
Rows 1 and 3 (WS):
Purl.
Row 2: K 1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * across.
Row 4: *K2tog tbl (through back loop), yo; rep from * across, end k 1.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Sleeve and Collar Pat.

BACK:

With Size 6 needles, cast on 95 (103, 113) sts. Work in Seed St for Border Pat for 8 rows inc 0 (1, 0) st at end of last row -- 95 (104, 113) sts. Change to Size 7 needles. Beg with Row 1, work in Body Pat until piece measures 12 (12, 13)" from beg, end WS. shape armholes: Keeping to pat, bind off 9 sts at beg of next 2 rows -- 77 (86, 95) sts. Work even in Body Pat until armholes measure 9 (10, 10½)". Bind off all sts.

LEFT FRONT:

With Size 6 needles, cast on 47 (49, 55) sts. Work in Seed St for Border pat for 8 rows, inc 0 (1, 1) st at end of last row -- 47 (50, 56) sts. Change to Size 7 needles. Work in Body Pat until piece measures 12 (12, 13)" from beg, end WS. Shape armhole: Next Row (RS): Keeping to pat, bind off 9 sts at beg of row -- 38 (41, 47) sts. Work even in Body Pat until armhole measures 4½ (5, 5½)". Shape V-neck: Dec 1 st at center front every other row 15 (15, 18) times. Work even in Body Pat until armhole measures 9 (10, 10½)". Bind off rem 23 (26, 29) sts.

RIGHT FRONT:

Work as for Left Front, rev shaping.

SLEEVES:

With Size 6 needles, cast on 75 (85, 85) sts. Work in Seed St for Border Pat for 5 rows. Change to Size 7 needles. Beg with Row 1, work in Sleeve and Collar Pat for 7 (8, 8½)". Bind off all sts.

COLLAR:

Holding two Size 7 needles together, cast on 121 sts. Work in Seed st for 5 rows. Next Row (RS): Work 3 sts in Seed st, work 115 sts in Sleeve and Collar Pat, work last 3 sts in Seed St. Continue in above established pat until approx 3½" from beg, ending with pat Row 4. Bind off as to knit; and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 11 sts evenly spaced.

FINISHING:

Left Front Button Band: With RS facing and Size 6 needles, pick up and approx k 81 (85, 91) sts evenly along Left Front center edge to beg of V-neck shaping. Work in Seed St for 8 rows. Bind off. Mark for 5 buttons: first 1" from bottom; the last¾" from neck edge and the other 3 evenly spaced between. Right Front Buttonhole Band: With RS facing and Size 6 needles, pick up and k same amount of sts along right front center edge as left front center edge to beg of V-neck shaping. Work in Seed St for 3 rows. Buttonhole Row: Keeping to Seed St, bind off 2 sts to correspond to each marker. Next Row: Keeping to Seed St, cast on 2 sts over each set of bound-off sts. Work in Seed st for 2 more rows. Bind off. Sew fronts to back at shoulders. Sew bound-off sts of sleeve to armhole, leaving bound-off sts of front and back armholes free. Sew bound-off sts of front and back armholes to sides of sleeves. Sew side and rem sleeve seams. Sew bound-off edge of collar to neck edge, leaving center front bands free. Sew on buttons.
