Felted Beanie Hat & Scarf

GAUGE:

Scarf 14 sts + 26 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Seed St on smaller needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Seed Stitch
Row 1 K 1, p 1; repeat across row.
Row 2 K the purl sts and p the knit sts as they present themselves.

SCARF PATTERN

Scarf Lace Edging (make 2)

The pattern illustrated in this chart is explained in full below
Cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 K 1, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 2 Knit 6.
Row 3 K 2, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 4 Knit 7.
Row 5 K 3, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 6 Knit 8.
Row 7 K 4, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 8 Bind off 4 sts, k to end – 5 sts.
Repeat 8 rows 6 more times, bind off all sts on last row. Leave approximately 1 yard tail on first piece, do not cut yarn on second piece, leave last st on needle.

Scarf
Using edging piece with working yarn attached, first st is on needle, pick up 27 sts along long flat edge, alternating front and back (as if to knit and as if to purl) – 28 sts.
Row 1 Slip 1 as if to knit, *k 1, p 1; repeat from *, end k 1.
Row 2 Slip 1 as if to purl, *p 1, k 1; repeat from *, end p 1.
Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 33".
Make slit: Next Row Work 10 sts in pattern, bind off 8 sts, work 10 sts.
Next Row Work 10 sts, cast on 8 sts, work 10 sts.
Continue as before for 11" more (or until yarn runs out). Sew second edging piece to end.

HAT PATTERN

Hat Lace Edging
The pattern shown in this chart is explained in full below

With double-pointed needles, cast on 6 sts.
Row 1 K 2, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 2 Knit 7.
Row 3 K 3, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 4 Knit 8.
Row 5 K 4, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 6 Knit 9.
Row 7 K 5, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 8 Knit 10.
Row 9 K 6, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2.
Row 10 Bind off 5 sts, k to end – 6 sts.
Repeat these 10 rows 15 times more. Bind off all sts on last row, do not cut yarn, leave last st on needle.

Hat
With circular needles, slip last st and pick up 90 sts along long edge of lace – 91 sts. Join to work in rounds of Seed St for 4". On last row, place 7 markers, 1 after every 13 sts.
Decrease Round Keeping in Seed St pattern, [dec1, work to marker] 7 times. Working Seed St btwn markers, work even in pattern for 3 rnds.
Work dec rnd [11 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 3 rnds.
Work dec rnd [10 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 3 rnds.
Work dec rnd [9 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 2 rnds.
Work dec rnd [8 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 2 rnds.
Work dec rnd [7 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 2 rnds.
Work dec rnd [6 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 1 rnd.
Work dec rnd [5 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 1 rnd.
Work dec rnd [4 sts btwn markers]. Work even for 1 rnd.
Work dec rnd [3 sts btwn markers].
Work dec rnd [2 sts btwn markers].
Work dec rnd [1 st btwn markers].
Cut yarn, draw through all sts on needle and fasten off. Sew ends of edging together.

Finishing
Felt Scarf and Hat by running through a hot wash cycle with a small amount of detergent. Dry. If hat does not shrink enough, repeat. Steam block into shape; stretching, straightening, and folding brim as needed.
