Lion Brand® Moonlight Mohair

14 sts = 4 inches [10 cm] in Stockinette st (k every rnd) on larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

M1 (make 1 st)
An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

With smaller needle, cast on 66 sts. Place marker and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist.

Purl 1 rnd.

Work in K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 1¼ inches [3 cm].

Purl 1 rnd.

Change to larger circular needles.

Setup Rnd *K 11, place marker; repeat from * to end of rnd.

Increase Rnds

Rnd 1 *Knit to marker, M1, slip marker; repeat from * to end of rnd – 72 sts.

Rnd 2 Knit.

Repeat Rnds 1-2 for 4 more times – 96 sts.

Purl 1 rnd.

Decrease Rnds

Note Change to dpn as necessary.

Rnd 1 Knit.

Rnd 2 *Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker; repeat from * to end of rnd – 90 sts.

Repeat Rnds 1-2 for 13 more times – 12 sts.

Next Rnd *K2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 6 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 6 inches [15 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Cut a 3 inches [7.5 cm] strip of cardboard. Wrap yarn around cardboard – the more wraps, the fuller Pompom will be. Cut yarn leading to skein and carefully slide yarn off cardboard. Cut a long piece of yarn and double it; carefully slide it under the center of the yarn and tie tightly with a double knot. Clip the loops, fluff out Pompom, and trim. Use the ends of the knotted strand to attach Pompom to top of Beret.

Beret Reviewed by Hildegarde A. Hammond on 2010-08-28 ****
This pattern was easy to follow and it took me 3-4 hours. It came out very well. One thing I would change if I made it again is the purl row after the ribbing -- I think it looks out of place and I would substitute a knit row. I like the purl row at the widest part of the hat as it defines the shape. I used Amazing Aurora and it only took one ball including the pom pom.
