GAUGE:

14 sts = 4 inches [10 cm] in Stockinette st (k every rnd) on larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1 st)
An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

TAM

With smaller needle, cast on 66 sts. Place marker and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist.

Purl 1 rnd.

Work in K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 1¼ inches [3 cm].

Purl 1 rnd.

Change to larger circular needles.

Setup Rnd *K 11, place marker; repeat from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2 *Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker; repeat from * to end of rnd – 90 sts.

Repeat Rnds 1-2 for 13 more times – 12 sts.

Next Rnd *K2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 6 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 6 inches [15 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

POMPOM

Cut a 3 inches [7.5 cm] strip of cardboard. Wrap yarn around cardboard – the more wraps, the fuller Pompom will be. Cut yarn leading to skein and carefully slide yarn off cardboard. Cut a long piece of yarn and double it; carefully slide it under the center of the yarn and tie tightly with a double knot. Clip the loops, fluff out Pompom, and trim. Use the ends of the knotted strand to attach Pompom to top of Beret.
