16 stitches + 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side), before felting. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Scarf will shrink after felting. Scarf is knit in Stockinette stitch. Bobbles are created by securing rigid plastic balls within portions of scarf, then felting.

Cast on 20 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch until only a few yards of yarn are left. Bind off loosely.

Weave in ends. With right side of Scarf facing, hold 1 ball at a time against wrong side of Scarf. Pull knitted fabric tightly around ball and tie with thread. Continue to randomly tie balls into Scarf as desired. Felt Scarf following instructions below. While piece is still damp, cut threads to remove balls. Pull Scarf into a rectangular shape.

Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape.

I'm Forever Blowing Bobbles Felted Scarf Reviewed by Cathleen on 2010-11-08 ****
It knits quick and it was fun to experiment with the "bubble" placement. Unfortunately, It shrunk much more than I expected, wish I had used another ball of yarn to knit the original size to about 90".
