Felted Beret

Lion Brand® Lion® Wool

15 sts + 20 rounds = 4 inches [10 cm] in circular St st (knit every round) before felting. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

M1 (make 1 st) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
S2KP (slip 2 as if to knit-knit 1-p2sso) Slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit 1, pass the 2 slipped sts over the knit st – 2 sts decreased.

Finished Beret size depends on how much the piece is felted. Keep in mind that you can always felt more, but once felting is done, it is not reversible.

It is best to begin the Beret on a circular needles and then switch to double-pointed needles when working the crown.

Cast on 80 stitches onto circular needles or double-pointed needles. Join, being careful not to twist, and work in rounds of K 1, P 1 Rib for 2 inches [5 cm].

Next Round *K 2, M1; repeat from * around –120 sts.

Change to circular St st and work for 6 inches [15 cm].

Round 1 K 6, *S2KP, k 12; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 6 – 104 sts.

Round 2 and all even rounds Knit.

Round 3 K 5, *S2KP, k 10; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 5 – 88 sts.

Round 5 K 4, *S2KP, k 8; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 4 – 72 sts.

Round 7 K 3, *S2KP, k 6; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 3 – 56 sts.

Round 9 K 2, *S2KP, k 4; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 2 – 40 sts.

Round 11 K 1, *S2KP, k 2; repeat from *, ending last repeat k 1 – 24 sts.

Round 13 *K2tog; repeat from * around, ending k 1 – 12 sts.

Round 15 *K2tog; repeat from * around, ending k 1 – 6 sts.

Next Round *K2tog; repeat from * around – 3 sts.

Knit i-cord on 2 double-pointed needles by *knitting 3 stitches, then carrying yarn in back and sliding stitches to right end of needle without turning work; repeat from * until i-cord measures 2" [5 cm]. Knit 3 together and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and lie flat to shape.
