'Famous Designer' Hat

Lion Brand Lion® Suede

GAUGE:

12 sts + 8 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Shell pattern on size 10 needle. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Row 1
With A, k3, [yo, k1, yo twice, k1, yo 3 times, k1, yo twice, k1, yo, k4] across, ending last repeat k3.

HAT

CROWN (make 2 with A)

Starting at top of crown with A, cast on 4 sts. Divide evenly over 4 dpns, pm and join, being careful not to twist sts.

Rnd 1 and all odd rnds: Knit.

Rnds 2 and 4 Kfb each st around – 16 sts after rnd 4.

Rnd 6 [K1, kfb next st] around – 24 sts.

Rnd 8 [K2, kfb next st] around – 32 sts.

Rnd 10 [K3, kfb next st] around – 40 sts.

Rnd 14 [K5, kfb next st] around – 56 sts.

Rnd 16 [K6, kfb next st] around – 64 sts.

Bind off all sts loosely with size 13 needle.

BRIM

With RS facing of one Crown, circular needles and A, working in Back Loops only, pick up and knit 64 sts around bound-off edge. DO NOT JOIN. Working back and forth, kfb first st, k to last st, kfb last st – 66 sts.

Shell pattern

Work row 1 of shell pattern across row. Continue to work rows 1 – 8 of shell pattern 2 times then rows 1 – 6 once.

Inc row Kfb in first st, *k7, kfb next st; repeat from * to last 9 sts, k8, kfb last st – 74 sts. Knit 1 row, then repeat rows 1-7. With size US 13 needle, bind off all sts loosely as if to knit.

FINISHING

Sew back seam. With WS together, sew second Crown to inside of hat. Weave in ends.

'Famous Designer' Hat Reviewed by Nancy McHone on 2008-02-02 **
I didn't like the hat when it was finished. The design did not look as good as the picture. Even though I had the gauge correct, the hat was too loose. It is not stretchy when made with suede yarn.
