GAUGE: 12 sts + 8 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Shell pattern on size 10 needle.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Shell Pattern (multiple of 8 sts + 2) Row 1 With A, k3, [yo, k1, yo twice, k1, yo 3 times, k1, yo twice, k1, yo, k4] across, ending last repeat k3. Row 2 Knit sts, dropping yos off needle without knitting to create long sts. Rows 3-4 Knit. Row 5 With B, k1, yo 3 times, k1, yo twice, k1, yo, [k4, yo, k1, yo twice, k1, yo 3 times, k1, yo twice, k1, yo], end at last repeat k4, yo, k1, yo twice, k1, yo 3 times, k1. Rows 6-8 Repeat rows 2-4 with B. Repeat rows 1 8 for shell pattern. Dropped loops of shell pattern may need to be pulled flat when work is finished.

HATCROWN (make 2 with A) Starting at top of crown with A, cast on 4 sts. Divide evenly over 4 dpns, pm and join, being careful not to twist sts.Rnd 1 and all odd rnds: Knit. Rnds 2 and 4 Kfb each st around 16 sts after rnd 4. Rnd 6 [K1, kfb next st] around 24 sts. Rnd 8 [K2, kfb next st] around 32 sts. Rnd 10 [K3, kfb next st] around 40 sts. Rnd 12 [K4, kfb next st] around 48 sts. Rnd 14 [K5, kfb next st] around 56 sts. Rnd 16 [K6, kfb next st] around 64 sts. Bind off all sts loosely with size 13 needle.BRIM With RS facing of one Crown, circular needles and A, working in Back Loops only, pick up and knit 64 sts around bound-off edge. DO NOT JOIN. Working back and forth, kfb first st, k to last st, kfb last st 66 sts.Shell pattern Work row 1 of shell pattern across row. Continue to work rows 1 8 of shell pattern 2 times then rows 1 6 once.Inc row Kfb in first st, *k7, kfb next st; repeat from * to last 9 sts, k8, kfb last st 74 sts. Knit 1 row, then repeat rows 1-7. With size US 13 needle, bind off all sts loosely as if to knit. FINISHING Sew back seam. With WS together, sew second Crown to inside of hat. Weave in ends.

| I didn't like the hat when it was finished. The design did not look as good as the picture. Even though I had the gauge correct, the hat was too loose. It is not stretchy when made with suede yarn.
