GAUGE: 12 sts + 29 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter st (knit every row).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Pattern STITCH (for scarf) Bias Garter Stitch Row 1 K 1, k into front and back of next st, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1. Row 2 Knit. Repeat Rows 1-2 for Bias Garter Stitch pattern.

HAT With A, cast on 64 sts. Work even in garter st until piece measures 4¼ inches [11 cm] from beginning.Shape Crown Row 1 (K 4, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 – 54 sts. Rows 2-4 Knit. Row 5 (K 3, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 – 44 sts. Rows 6-8 Knit. Row 9 (K 2, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 – 34 sts. Row 10 Knit. Row 11 (K 1, k2tog) 11 times, k 1 – 23 sts. Row 12 Knit. Row 13 (K 1, k2tog) 7 times, k 2 – 16 sts. Row 14 K 1, (k2tog) 7 times, k 1 – 9 sts. Break yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew seam, draw through remaining sts, and sew seam.Pom Poms – Make 1 in each color Wrap yarn around pom pom maker or 1¾" [4.5 cm] strip of cardboard; the more wraps, the fuller the pom pom will be. Carefully slide yarn off of pom pom maker or cardboard. Tie an 8" [20.5 cm] double strand of yarn tightly around the center. Knot securely.
