GAUGE:

12 sts + 19 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A on largest needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

All pieces are worked with largest needles unless otherwise noted.

CHICKEN LITTLE HAT
With B, cast on 56 (62, 66) sts. Work in St st for 4 rows. Purl 2 rows. Change to A. Work in St st for 20 (22, 24) rows.

Shape Top
Row 1 (RS)
K 1 (1, 0), *k 4, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9, 10) times, end k 1 (1 ,0) – 47 (52, 55) sts.
Rows 2, 4 and 6 Purl.
Row 3 K 1 (1, 0), *k 3, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9, 10) times, end k 1 (1, 0) – 38 (42, 44) sts.
Row 5 K 1 (1, 0), *k 2, k2tog; rep from * 8 (9,10) times, end k 1 (1, 0) – 29 (32, 33) sts.
Row 7 K 1 (0, 1), *k2tog; rep from * 6 (7, 7) times – 15 (16, 17) sts.
Row 8 *P2tog; rep from * 6 (7, 6) times, end p 1 (0, 0), p3tog 0 (0, 1) time – 8 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing seam. With large-eyed blunt needle, thread tail through remaining sts on needle. Pull tightly and secure. Sew back seam.

COCKS COMB
With D, cast on 6 sts.
Row 1 Bind off 5 sts. Leaving remaining st on right needle, cast on 5 sts – 6 sts.
Row 2 Bind off 5 sts. Leaving remaining st on right needle, cast on 7 sts – 8 sts.
Row 3 Bind off 7 sts, cast on 7 sts.
Row 4 Bind off 7 sts, cast on 10 sts – 11 sts.
Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st and pull to tighten.

EYE – Make 2
With B, cast on 1 st.
Row 1 Knit into front, back and front of st – 3 sts.
Row 2 Purl.
Row 3 K3tog – 1 st.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st and pull to tighten.

BEAK
With C, cast on 15 sts.
Row 1 (RS) K 6, k3tog, k 6 – 13 sts.
Row 2 and All WS Rows Purl.
Row 3 K 5, k3tog, k 5 – 11 sts.
Row 5 K 4, k3tog, k 4 – 9 sts.
Row 7 K 3, k3tog, k 3 – 7 sts.
Row 9 K 2, k3tog, k 2 – 5 sts.
Row 11 K 1, k3tog, k 1 – 3 sts.
Row 12 P3tog – 1 st.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st and pull to tighten. Fold Beak in half. Sew Beak seam.

FINISHING

Using photo as a guide, sew Beak to center front of hat 3/4" [2 cm] above beginning of A. Sew Eyes on each side of Beak. Sew Cocks Comb to top center front with short bind offs in front. Glue feathers to center top.

Really easy. I added a rib border because it was a little short; and now it stays on better.

Not a fan of the yarn.
