GAUGE:
4 sts and 8 rows = 1" in garter st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:

The bottom of the bag made as instructed ended up at my knees when things were put in it and it stretched. The next time I made it, I DID NOT do the "work in pattern stitch 6" and (because of the construction of the handle increases) ended up being a shorter handle which I though was more proportionate. As an unintended consequence, the shoulder strap ends up being wider and thus distributes weight better. I love the swirled design created by the decreases. It is a shame that it is hidden on the bottom. :(
