Additional Materials
Top: enough 45" wide fabric sufficient to cover table + 3 inches in every direction. A common size for picnic tables is 36 inches x 72 inches [91.5 cm x
182cm]. The oval table used in the example is 48 inches x 72 inches [approx. 122 x 189cm] and needed 3 yards [2.75 m]
Skirt: 5 yards 45" wide fabric is sufficient for tables with an circumference of up to 200 inches.

Trim: 3" wide trim of your choice (eyelet lace shown) in a length equal to the outside table measurement plus 12 inches. In our
example, 7 yards
Elastic: ¾ inch elastic of a length equal to roughly¾ of the length of the outside table measurement. In our example, 4 yards.

Thread of an appropriate color
Straight pins: as needed.

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

TABLECLOTH

Top
Place the material on the table and cut edge to be 3 inches wider than the table as shown.  If your table is wider than the fabric, piece the fabric as needed.

Side
Fold the material to a width of 15 inches lengthwise as shown and cut into segments as shown.

Place right sides together and sew or serge the segments together to form a circle as shown.  Press seam (open if sewn.) This is the table skirt

Run two gathering threads on the inside edge of the table skirt

Pull thread and gather skirt to the outside diameter of the tablecloth top.  Pin and sew or serge skirt to tablecloth top.  Press.

Trim
Put tablecloth on table.   Place trim at edge of table and pin in place.   With right sides together, stitch trim.   If the trim has removable backing, remove it.   Fold trim over and topstitch¼ inch from top edge of trim so that it will fold down.

Elastic
The elastic goes on the wrong side of the tablecloth, underneath the trim, immediately above the join of the skirt to the tablecloth top.

Place the elastic and secure one end with a zig-zag stitch to start it.   Stretching the elastic, using a wide and long zig-zag stitch, stitch the elastic in place all the way around the edge of the tablecloth.  When the cloth is put on the table, the elastic will hold it under the edge so it cannot blow away.

The trim will fold down and conceal the elastic.

FINISHING
Hem or serge the bottom edge, as you may wish.
