Patriotic Placemats and Coasters

Lion Brand^® Lion^® Cotton

GAUGE:

14 sts = 3 inches [7.5 cm] + 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter st (knit every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

PLACEMAT
With A, cast on 48 sts. [Knit 10 rows. Change to B. Knit 10 rows. Change to A.] 5 times. Knit 10 rows with A. Change to C. Knit 9 rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Side Edging

With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 48 sts across cast on edge. Knit 8 rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Top and Bottom Edging

With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 74 sts evenly spaced across top edge of placemat. Knit 8 rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit. Repeat along bottom edge.

Weave in ends.

COASTER

Note Coaster is worked in strips, then edged and sewn together.

STRIP 1

With A, cast on 6 sts. Knit 10 rows. Change to C. Knit 10 rows. Change to B. Knit 10 rows. Place sts on holder.

STRIP 2

With C, cast on 6 sts. Knit 10 rows. Change to B. Knit 10 rows. Change to A. Knit 10 rows. Place sts on holder.

STRIP 3

With B, cast on 6 sts. Knit 10 rows. Change to A. Knit 10 rows. Change to C. Knit 10 rows.

FINISHING

Join Strips

With RS facing, place Strip 1 on empty needle, then Strip 2, then Strip 3. With C, knit across 6 sts from Strip 3, 6 sts from Strip 2, then 6 sts from Strip 1. Knit 2 more rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Bottom Edging

With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 6 sts across bottom of Strip 1, 6 sts across bottom of Strip 2, and 6 sts across bottom of Strip 3 – 18 sts. Knit 2 more rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Side Edging

With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 22 sts along side of Coaster. Knit 2 rows. Bind off all sts as if to knit. Repeat along opposite edge.

Sew Strips together between top and bottom edgings. Weave in ends.

I was looking to make patriotic themed placemats for my brother & wife for a house warming gift. Was very excited when I saw these. I've made 2 so far & am working on a third. There are 2 reasons why I did not give the pattern 5 stars. 1 - the pattern does not tell you how many placemats can be made from the supplies given. I do realize that things can vary, like how loose or tight one knits, but a ballpark would be nice. I now know I overordered yarn (no one in my area carries the Lion Cotton). I'm still on my first ball of each color & I've started placemat #3. I'm going to be making them for all sorts of family & friends. 2 - I made the first placemat following the directions and ended up with slight gaps between the white stripe & the blue stripe that was picked up and knitted. Why not just start w/ blue, change as written & end with blue. I did that w/ my 2nd and I was much happier with the way it turned out. OK, no one I showed them to saw the gaps but hey, I'm a perfectionist. They look great & it is a simple project that doesn't require a whole lot of thinking.
