20 sts + 26 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette St (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

3-needle bind off Put half of sts on spare needle, place 2 needles holding sts together, right sides together (wrong side will face out). Knit together one st from each needle, *knit together one st from each needle, pass first st worked over second to bind off*; rep from * to * across to last st. Cut working yarn and pull through last st to secure.

With smaller needles, cast on 95 (105, 115, 125, 135, 141) sts. Work 6 rows Stockinette st, then K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) inches from beg. On last row of ribbing, inc 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 1) st – 95 (105, 115, 125, 135, 142) sts. Change to larger needles and work in Stockinette st until piece measures 24 (25 ˝, 27, 28, 29, 30) inches from beg. Knit 32 (35, 38, 42, 45, 47) sts and place on holder; bind off center 31 (35, 39, 41, 45, 48) sts; knit rem 32 (35, 38, 42, 45, 47) sts and place on another holder.

Work same as back until piece measures 21 (22, 24, 25, 26, 27) inches from beg, ending with a WS row. Shape neck K 38 (41, 44, 48, 51, 53) sts. Join second ball of yarn and loosely bind off center 19 (23, 27, 29, 33, 36) sts, then work rem sts. Working both sides at same time, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge every RS row 2 times; 1 st every RS row 2 times; then work even and finish as for back. With WS together, work 3-needle bind-off at shoulders.

With smaller needles, cast on 43 (49, 49, 53, 53, 57) sts. Work 6 rows Stockinette st, then K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) inches from beg. Inc 19 (18, 19, 16, 21, 22) sts on last row of ribbing – 46 (49, 52); 62 (67, 68, 69, 74, 79) sts. Change to larger needles and work in Stockinette st inc 1 st at each edge every 6 (6, 5, 5, 5, 5) rows 14 (14, 16, 18, 18, 18) times. Work even until piece measures 16 (17, 17, 18, 18, 18) inches from beg. Bind off loosely.

With RS facing and larger needles, pick up and knit 60 (60, 64, 70, 76, 80) sts evenly around neck edge starting at RS of neck and leaving center front 19 (23, 27, 29, 33, 36) sts free. Inc 9 (9, 9, 9, 11, 11) sts evenly spaced across first row – 69 (69, 73, 79, 87, 91) sts. Work even until Hood measures 12 (12, 12, 13, 13, 14) inches long. Fold in half, and work 3-needle bind-off to close seam along top of hood.

Edging With smaller needles and RS facing, pick up and knit 155 (155, 155, 169, 169, 181) sts around edge of neck and hood. Work K1, P1 Rib for (2) (2˝) inches. Dec 16 sts evenly across last row of ribbing, and work 6 rows Stockinette st. Bind off on 7th row. Sew rib/roll front at center neck, overlapping center front (left overlap for male, right overlap for female).

POCKET (optional)

With larger needles, cast on 50 (50, 60, 60, 60, 60) sts. Work in Stockinette st until piece measures 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) inches long. Bind off sts. With RS facing and smaller-sized needles, pick up and knit 31 (31, 31, 33, 33, 33) sts from left and right side edges of Pocket. Work (4); (6) rows of K1, P1 Rib, then 5 rows of Stockinette st. Bind off on 6th row. Center pocket on front and sew neatly in place.

Mark armholes 9 (9˝, 10, 10˝, 11, 11˝) inches from shoulder seams and sew sleeves between markers. Sew all sleeve and side seams. Weave in loose ends.

Adult Hooded Sweater Reviewed by Ruth Ann Ruddell on 2012-03-09 *****
I knitted this pattern in a self-striping yarn. I followed the directions exactly. I hope to knit another one but will add a couple of inches to the sleeves. I love the sweater and enjoyed knitting it.
