GAUGE:

20 sts + 26 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette St (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3-needle bind off Put half of sts on spare needle, place 2 needles holding sts together, right sides together (wrong side will face out). Knit together one st from each needle, *knit together one st from each needle, pass first st worked over second to bind off*; rep from * to * across to last st. Cut working yarn and pull through last st to secure.

BACK

With smaller needles, cast on 71 (79, 87) sts. Work 6 rows Stockinette st, then K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 2 (2, 2) inches from beg. On last row of ribbing, inc 1 (1, 0) st – 72 (80, 87) sts. Change to larger needles and work in Stockinette st until piece measures 16½ (17½, 18½) inches from beg. Knit 24 (26, 27) sts and place on holder; bind off center 24 (28, 29) sts; knit rem 24 (26, 27) sts and place on another holder.

FRONT

Work same as back until piece measures 14½ (15½, 16½) inches from beg, ending with a WS row. Shape neck K 30 (32, 35) sts. Join second ball of yarn and loosely bind off center 12 (16, 17) sts, then work rem sts. Working both sides at same time, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge every RS row 2 times; 1 st every RS row 2 times; then work even and finish as for back. With WS together, work 3-needle bind-off at shoulders.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles, cast on 33 (33, 37) sts. Work 6 rows Stockinette st, then K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 2 (2, 2) inches from beg. Inc 13 (16, 15) sts on last row of ribbing – 46 (49, 52) sts. Change to larger needles and work in Stockinette st inc 1 st at each edge every 5 (5, 5) rows 13 (13, 15) times. Work even until piece measures 12 (13, 14) inches from beg. Bind off loosely.

HOOD

With RS facing and larger needles, pick up and knit 48 (52, 54) sts evenly around neck edge starting at RS of neck and leaving center front 12 (16, 17) sts free. Inc 5 (7, 7) sts evenly spaced across first row – 53 (59, 61) sts. Work even until Hood measures 9 (9½, 10) inches long. Fold in half, and work 3-needle bind-off to close seam along top of hood.

Edging With smaller needles and RS facing, pick up and knit 117 (117, 129) sts around edge of neck and hood. Work K1, P1 Rib for (2) [2½] inches. Dec 16 sts evenly across last row of ribbing, and work 6 rows Stockinette st. Bind off on 7th row. Sew rib/roll front at center neck, overlapping center front (left overlap for male, right overlap for female).

POCKET (optional)

With larger needles, cast on 30 (35, 40) sts. Work in Stockinette st until piece measures 4½ (5, 5) inches long. Bind off sts. With RS facing and smaller-sized needles, pick up and knit 23 (23, 25) sts from left and right side edges of Pocket. Work (4); [6] rows of K1, P1 Rib, then 5 rows of Stockinette st. Bind off on 6th row. Center pocket on front and sew neatly in place.

FINISHING

Mark armholes 7 (7½, 8) inches from shoulder seams and sew sleeves between markers. Sew all sleeve and side seams. Weave in loose ends.
