Bright Placemats

Lion Brand® Lion® Cotton

GAUGE:

16 stitches + 30 rows (15 ridges) = 4" (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row) using Size 8 needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

FINISHING

The edges are finished with a fringe of approximately 2 inches [5 cm] in length; one strand of each of the four colors. Fringe assembly is per diagram below; one knot of fringe on every other stitch. Trim fringe if desired.

1.  Starting at the bottom of the placemat, insert the crochet hook through the first outside stitch, from the wrong side of the placemat to the top.   Use the hook to grab one strand of each of the four colors of yarn.
2.  Use the hook to pull the yarn through the stitch
3.  Cut the yarn, approximately 2˝ inches [6 cm] from the loop
4.  Feed the ends of the yarn through the loop
5.  Pull the loop tight.

Trim fringe if desired.

When I saw these I immediately thought of my grandma's fiesta dishes, and when another reviewer said they matched perfectly I had to make them. I got these four done but I'd like to make a set of 10-12 and somehow get an orange or seaspray color in there too but I'm afraid they won't look as awesome as the suggested colorways. I'll give it a shot though. I love the colors and the easy pattern, but only knocked a star off because I think the garter stitch is a little squishy for a placemat for my tastes. I wish I'd've seen the crochet version first because I think that one would've turned out a little stiffer like my grandma's other placemats are. I still think she'll like these and am excited to give them to her!
