GAUGE:

16 sts + 22 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) over St st (k on RS, p on WS).
19 sts + 25 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) over Pattern St 1. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Instructions for Pattern St 1 are given in two ways: for flat knitting and for in-the-round knitting, as both are used.

LEGS (make 2)
With circular needles and MC cast on 44 sts. Do not join. Working back and forth in rows beg Flat Knitting instructions for Pattern St 1 and work until piece measures approximately 2 inches, end with a Row 10 of pattern.
Next row (WS) Cast on 3 (5, 8) sts at beg and end of next row while working next pattern row on center 44 sts – 50 (54, 60) sts. Slip these sts of first leg to holder and rep for second leg.
Join Legs: Next row (RS) With RS facing out, knit across 50 (54, 60) sts of second leg, then across 50 (54, 60) leg sts from holder – 100 (108, 120) sts. Join, taking care not to twist sts and pm (place marker) to mark beg of rnd (center back).
Next rnd K 3 (5, 8), work Rnd 3 of In-the-round instructions for Pattern St 1 over next 44 sts, k 6 (10, 16) (front center), work Rnd 3 of In-the-round instructions for Pattern St 1 over next 44 sts, k 3 (5, 8). Cont to work center front and back 6 (10, 16) sts in St st and cont to work In-the-round instructions for Pattern St 1 over other sts until piece measures approx 8¼ (11¼, 12¾) inches from beg, end with a Pattern St 1 Row 10.
Next rnd Work in St st, dec 10 (8, 10) sts evenly across rnd – 90 (100, 110) sts. Join A and work 3 rnds of Pattern 2. Cut off MC and work even with A in rnds of St st until piece measures 1½ inches above last row of Pattern 2 (last MC row).
Next rnd
Dec 10 sts evenly across rnd – 80 (90, 100) sts. Work even for 1 inches. Change to B and work even until piece measures approximately 13½ (16½, 18) inches from beg.

FRONT and BACK SPLIT
Next rnd
K 17 (19, 21) (back sts), bind off 6 (7, 8) sts (armhole), k 34 (38, 42) (front sts), bind off 6 (7, 8) sts (armhole), k 17 (19, 21) (back sts). Cut yarn.

BACK
Slip first 17 (19, 21) sts to right needle next to last 17 (19, 21) sts, then place front 34 (38, 42) sts on holder. Working back and forth in rows on Back 34 (38, 42) sts only, attach yarn and purl first row (WS).
Armhole Shaping: Next row (RS) Cont in St st, dec 1 st at beg and end of this and every foll RS row 3 (4, 6) times more – 26 (28, 28) sts. Work even until armhole measures 3½ (3¾, 4) inches, end with a RS row.
I-cord Shoulder Ties: Next row (WS) Work across first 8 sts as foll: P 1, p2tog, p 2, p2tog, p 1. Leaving rest of row unworked, TURN and cont to work back and forth on these 8 sts only.
Next row (RS) K 1 [k2tog] twice, k 1. DO NOT TURN. Slip these 4 sts to one dpn and with another dpn, without turning work, k these 4 sts with yarn from end of row. Cont in this manner, slipping sts to other end of needle and knitting every row to create a tubular I-cord. When I-cord measures 6½ inches or desired length, cut yarn and pull through rem sts. Join yarn at unworked sts and bind off center 10 (12, 12) sts purlwise, then work I-cord shoulder ties on last 8 sts as before.
