GAUGE:
17 sts = 4" on larger needles in stockinette stitch. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
If you adjust (shorten) sweater length, also adjust pocket depth and pocket lining by 1" to 2". You will also need to adjust the number of sts picked up to work button and buttonhole bands.
BACK: With smaller needles, cast on 90 (98, 106, 114) sts. Ribbing: Row 1: (RS) K 2, work (p 2, k 2) across. Row 2: P 2, (k 2, p 2) across. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until ribbing measures 2", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. K 1 row, decreasing 8 (6, 6, 4) sts evenly spaced across 82 (92, 100, 110) sts. Starting with a p row, continue in stockinette st (p on WS, k on RS rows) until piece measures 28" or length desired to shoulders. Bind off all sts.
POCKET LININGS: (Make 2) With larger needles, cast on 26 sts. Work in stockinette st for 5½" (see Note above). Place all sts on a holder.
LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles, cast on 42 (46, 50, 54) sts. Work in ribbing as for Back for 2", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. K 1 row, decreasing 2 sts evenly spaced across 40 (44, 48, 52) sts. Continue in stockinette st until 8" from beg (see Note above), ending with a WS row. Join Pocket: Next Row (RS): K 7 (9, 11, 13) sts, place next 26 sts on a holder; with RS of pocket lining sts facing you, k across 26 sts of one pocket lining, k remaining 7 (9, 11, 13) sts (40 (44, 48, 52) sts). Continue to work even until piece measures 10" less than Back to shoulder, ending with a WS row.
V-neck Shaping: Next Row (RS): K to last 3 sts, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1 (dec made at neck edge). Continue in stockinette st and dec at neck edge every 4th row 12 (12, 13, 13) times more (27 (31, 34, 38) sts). Work even until same length as Back to shoulder. Bind off all sts.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to Left Front, working dec row for V-neck shaping as follows: On RS, k 1, k2tog, k to end.
SLEEVES: With smaller needles, cast on 42 (42, 46, 46) sts. Work in ribbing as for Back for 3", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. K 1 row and inc 3 (5, 5, 7) sts evenly spaced across (45 (47, 51, 53) sts). Continue in stockinette st and inc 1 st each end of every 4th row 16 times (77 (79, 83, 85) sts). Work even until Sleeve measures 19½" or length desired to underarm. Bind off.
FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Pocket Ribbing: With smaller needles, on one front, pick up 26 sts of pocket from holder, work in ribbing as for Back for 1½". Bind off in ribbing. Sew ends of ribbing to Front; sew edges of pocket lining to WS Front. Repeat for other Front. Upper False Pocket Ribbing: With smaller needles, cast on 18 sts. Work in ribbing as for Back for 1½". Bind off in ribbing. Sew to Left Front about 9" above Pocket, aligning one (front) edge of Pocket and false pocket ribbing. Mark side edges of Front and Back 9 (9¼, 9¾, 10)" from shoulder seam for armholes. Sew top edge of each Sleeve to armhole between markers. Sew side and sleeve seam. Neck and Front Ribbing: (Note: Allowing about 4 sts per 1", adjust number of sts to be picked up to match any adjustment to sweater length). For Woman's Sweater: Buttonband: Starting at right shoulder seam on RS and using smaller needles, pick up and k 36 sts around Back neck edge, then 130 more sts along Left Front edge to bottom. Work in ribbing as for Back for 6 rows. Bind off in ribbing. Mark placement for 6 buttons, the first 1" above lower edge, the last at start of V-neck shaping, the rest evenly spaced between. Buttonhole Band On Right Front, pick up and k 130 sts along front edge. Work in ribbing for 2 rows. Buttonhole Row Keeping ribbing as established, bind off 2 sts opposite each evenly spaced buttonhole marker. On following row, cast on 2 sts over those bound off. Work in ribbing for 2 more rows. Bind off in ribbing. Sew buttons on ribbing at markers. For Man's Sweater: In same manner as for woman's sweater, work Buttonband on Right Front and around Back neck to left shoulder seam; work Buttonhole Band on Left Front.
