GAUGE:

On larger needle, 14 sts x 18 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] square BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK

Ribbing: Row 1 (RS): K 1, then work (p1, k 1) across.
Row 2: P 1, (k 1, p 1) across. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice more. Change to larger needles and White. Work even in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 13¼" from beg.
Shoulders and Neck: Next row: Bind off first 15 sts, work center 17 sts and place these sts on a holder for back neck, bind off last 15 sts.

LEFT FRONT: With Blue and smaller needles, cast on 21 sts. Work ribbing as for back. Change to larger needles and White. Work even in stockinette st until piece measures 11¾ from beg, ending with a RS row.
Neck: Next row: Bind off 2 sts; then p to end. Continue in stockinette st and at neck edge on WS rows, bind of 2 sts once more, then dec 1 st every other row twice (15 sts). Work even until front measures same as back to shoulder. Bind off all sts for shoulder.

Next row: K and inc 4 sts evenly spaced across (27 sts). Starting with a p row, work in stockinette st for 5 rows. Work in stripe pattern in stockinette st, alternating 6 rows of Blue and 6 rows of Pink. AND AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st each end of every 5th row 6 times (39 sts). Work even until 4th Blue stripe beyond ribbing is completed. Sleeve should measure about 11" from beg. Bind off all sts loosely.

RIGHT SLEEVE: Starting with Pink for ribbing, then alternating Blue and Pink stripes, work as for left sleeve, ending with 4th Pink stripe. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband: With RS of work facing you, using smaller needles and Pink, pick up and k 9 sts along neck edge to shoulder seam, join pastel blue and k 17 back neck sts from holder, then pick up and k 9 sts along left neck edge. (Note: To change colors on ribbing rows, twist yarns, bringing new color under old to prevent holes in the work.) Keeping colors as established, work 6 rows of k 1, p 1 ribbing. Bind off in ribbing, using appropriate color.
Left Front Buttonband: With RS of work facing you, using Blue and smaller needles, pick up and k 53 sts evenly spaced along left front edge (including ends of neck and bottom ribbing). Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 6 rows. Bind off in ribbing.

Rib next row, casting on 2 sts over bound-off sts for each buttonhole, then rib 2 rows more. Bind off in ribbing. Mark side edge of fronts and back 5¾" from shoulder seam for armholes. Sew sleeves to armholes between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons opposite buttonholes.

Bobbles: (Make 8 Pink and 6 Blue): With larger needles, cast on 1 st. K into the front and back of this st twice (4 sts). (P 1 row, k 1 row) twice. Pass the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sts over the first to bind off. Cut yarn, leaving long strand; draw strand through remaining st on needle to fasten off. 'Stripes & Bobbles' Cardigan Reviewed by Ruth Sayers on 2008-07-03 *****
I do a lot of charity knitting and this bobble cardigan was the cutest sweater I have made yet. And I do about 50 sweaters a year. Yes, I adapt the patterns for my knitting machine and this one worked up beautifully.
Thank you so much for the free pattern!
