GAUGE: 15 sts + 20 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in Check pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: | ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog. STITCH PATTERN Check Pattern (multiple of 4 + 2) Rows 1 and 5 Knit. Rows 2 and 6 Purl. Row 3 K 1, (k 2, p 2) across, end k 1. Row 4 P 1, (k 2, p 2) across, end p 1. Row 7 K 1, (p 2, k 2) across, end k 1. Row 8 P 1, (p 2, k 2) across, end p 1.

BACKPACK
Cast on 34 sts. Work 8 rows in Check pattern. Eyelet Row K 4, [yo, ssk, k 3] across. Work in Check pattern until piece measures 12" from beg. Repeat Eyelet row. Work in Check pattern until piece measures 14", bind off all sts. Make second piece to match. Strap
Make an I-cord strap as follows: With dpns, cast on 4 sts. *Slide work to other end of needle, k 4. Repeat from * until 80" long. Cut yarn. Pull end through last row. Finishing
Sew backpack pieces together at sides and bottom. Tie an overhand knot in the center of the strap. At the top of the bag with front facing, place knot at center and weave strap in and out of bag, beginning at the hole to the left of center, and ending at hole halfway around on the back side. Repeat with other end of strap on right side. Tie an overhand knot 8" from the end of each strap. With front of bag facing and left strap, working through both layers, go in leftmost hole from back to front, weave in and out towards center. Repeat with right strap. Tie ends in a square knot at center front.
