Lion Brand® Incredible®

12 stitches + 20 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch (knit every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Top is worked from side-to-side. To make longer or shorter, cast on more or less stitches at beginning.

Cast on 28 (30, 32, 35, 38) stitches. Knit 6 (8, 8, 8, 10) rows.

Shape Armhole

Row 1 Knit 2, knit in front and back of next stitch, knit to end – 1 stitch increased. Mark this row as right side.

Row 2 Knit.

Repeat last 2 rows 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times – 33 (35, 38, 42, 46) stitches. On next right side row, cast on 16 (16, 17, 17, 19) stitches for armhole – 49 (51, 55, 59, 65) stitches. Work even in garter stitch for 50 (56, 60, 66, 70) rows (approximately 10 (11, 12, 13, 14) inches), ending with a wrong side row.

Shape Armhole Bind off 16 (16, 17, 17, 19) stitches, knit to end – 33 (35, 38, 42, 46) stitches.

Next Row Knit.

Next Row Knit 2, knit 2 together, knit to end.

Repeat last 2 rows 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times – 28 (30, 32, 35, 38) stitches.

Knit 6 (8, 8, 8, 10) rows even. Bind off all stitches.

Work as for Back.

Sew side seams using crochet thread. Sew 1 (1, 1½, 1½, 2) inches at each shoulder for shoulder seam.

Cast on 20 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 8 inches.

Make Slit Knit 9, knit in front and back of next stitch; join 2nd ball of yarn and knit in front and back of next stitch, knit 9 – 11 stitches each side. Working both sides at same time, work in garter stitch for 3 inches.

Next Row Knit 9, knit 2 together; continuing with same yarn across other side, knit 2 together, knit 9 – 20 stitches. Cut yarn that is no longer being used.

Work even in garter stitch for 18 inches. Repeat slit as before, then work across all 20 stitches for 8 inches. Bind off.

Knit Ribbon Top & Scarf Reviewed by Cindi Champagne on 2009-08-17 ****
This was my first clothing project and I couldn't believe how easy it was! I was a little nervous in the beginning, worried the ribbon wouldn't 'lay' as it should. Once I relaxed and gave it no thought, it worked out just fine. Now I use the ribbon for hats and slippers too!
