GAUGE
12 sts + 18 rows = 4” (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with MC on larger needles.
14 sts + 18 rows = 4” (10 cm) in knit 2, purl 2 rib with one strand each MC and CC held tog on smaller needles.

Left Side
With WS facing, place Left Side 25 sts on needle.
Next Row (WS) Cast on 4 sts, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1 – 29 sts.
Next Row K 1, p 1, k to last 4 sts, (p 1, k 1) twice.
Next Row (P 1, k 1) twice, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1.
Repeat last 2 rows 12 times more, binding off 4 sts at beg of last WS row – 25 sts.
Join
With RS facing, k 25 sts of Left Side, bind off 4 sts; k across 40 Center sts; k across 25 Right Side sts – 90 sts. Work 5 rows even in St st.

GAUGE:

12 sts + 18 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with MC on larger needles.
14 sts + 18 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in knit 2, purl 2 rib with one strand each MC and CC held tog on smaller needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

BACK

With larger needles, cast on 90 sts. Knit 1 row.

Row 1 (RS) K 1, p 1, k to last 2 sts, p 1, k 1.

Row 2 P 1, k 1, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 13 inches from beginning, ending with a WS row. Work 6 rows even in St st.

Shape Body

Dec Row (RS) K 2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k 2. Repeat dec row every other row 24 times more – 40 sts. End with a WS row.

Shape Shoulder

Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then 4 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 18 sts.

FRONT

With larger needles, cast on 90 sts. Knit 1 row.

Row 1 (RS) K 1, p 1, k to last 2 sts, p 1, k 1.

Row 2 P 1, k 1, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 7 inches from beginning, ending with a WS row.

Divide for Hand Openings

Next Row K 1, p 1, k 23; place these 25 sts on holder for Left Side. (K 1, p 1) twice, k 32, (p 1, k 1) twice; place these 40 sts on holder for Center. K 23, p 1, k 1.

Right Side

Next Row (WS) P 1, k 1, p 23, cast on 4 sts.

Next Row (K 1, p 1) twice, k to last 2 sts, p 1, k 1.

Next Row P 1, k 1, p to last 4 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice.

Repeat last 2 rows 12 times more, end last row bind off last 4 sts. Break yarn. Place remaining 25 sts on holder.

Center

With WS facing, place Center 40 sts on needle and join yarn.

Next Row (WS) (P 1, k 1) twice, p to last 4 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice.

Next Row (K 1, p 1) twice, k to last 4 sts, (p 1, k 1) twice.

Repeat last 2 rows 12 times more. Break yarn. Place sts on holder.

Left Side

With WS facing, place Left Side 25 sts on needle.

Next Row (WS) Cast on 4 sts, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1 – 29 sts.

Next Row K 1, p 1, k to last 4 sts, (p 1, k 1) twice.

Next Row (P 1, k 1) twice, p to last 2 sts, k 1, p 1.

Repeat last 2 rows 12 times more, binding off 4 sts at beg of last WS row – 25 sts.

Join

With RS facing, k 25 sts of Left Side, 4 sts; k across 40 Center sts; k across 25 Right Side sts – 90 sts. Work 5 rows even in St st.

Shape Body

Dec row (RS) K 2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k 2. Repeat dec row every other row 24 times more – 40 sts. End with a WS row.

Shape Neck Opening and Shoulders

Next row (RS) K 15, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 10 sts, k to end of row. At neck edge bind off 2 sts once, then 1 st twice. AT SAME TIME, at shoulder bind off 3 sts once, then 4 sts twice. Repeat shaping on remaining side.

COLLAR

Sew shoulder seams.

Note Collar is worked with one strand each MC and CC held together.

With RS facing, beginning at right shoulder seam with smaller needles, pick up and k 50 sts evenly around neck opening. Work 3 inches in K2, P2 Rib, beginning with p 2 on next row. Inc 1 st each end every other row 20 times – 90 sts. When piece measures 13 inches from beginning, bind off all sts loosely in pattern.

Sew Body and side seams, leaving 6 inches openings at top of each side seam. Tack down 4 cast-on and bound-off sts at beginning and end of Center hand openings, overlapping Center over Right and Left Sides. Beginning at inside base of Collar, sew 5½ inches of Collar seam. Weave in ends.
