GAUGE:

10 sts + 18 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Decrease Rnd *K 1, k2tog; repeat from * around as many times as possible; k any remaining sts – 80 (87) sts.

Ponchette / Capelet Reviewed by Lisa Dulac on 2013-11-10 ****
It's been a couple years since this item was reviewed, but I'm REALLY GLAD I read them as everyone's comments about adjustments were helpful! Here's what I did for the M/L size: cast on and completed first two rounds w/sz 11; switched to sz 10.5, going all the way to the next section of purl and knit rounds; stayed w/10.5 for two rounds, and then switched back to sz 11 until ready to bind off; bound off w/sz 13. Mine ended up looking like a mock turtleneck ponchette, but that's OK. I think the S/M would be for a really small person or young child. I had three skeins of Homespun, and I knit pretty much to gauge-I only used about 1.5 skeins, so I'm sure I can get another ponchette completed w/the remainder.
