GAUGE:

13 sts + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Knitted Jacket & Hat Reviewed by Rosita Diesman on 2009-12-09 *
Extremly heavy garment. Although I followed the directions & my stitch gauge was perfect, the sleeves came out way too long. In sewing up the garment, the yarn kept splitting, I would never use Homespun again for anything other than an Afghan or a hat or scarf -- nothing that involved sewing up seams. Since I have some black Homespun, I am going to make the hat with fun fur added, and on either a circular or on four needles. I never wore the sweater, but gave it to one of our Catholic charities here in Great Falls, Montana.
