GAUGE:
13 sts + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.
JACKET
BACK
With smaller needles and A, cast on 68 (76, 84, 92) sts. Work in rib k2, p2 rib for 8 rows. With larger needles, work in St st until piece measures 32½ (33, 33½, 34)" from beg; end with WS row completed.
Shape shoulders and neck Bind off 7 (7, 9,10) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 7 (8, 9, 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 8 (10, 10, 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off center 24 (26, 28, 28) sts for back of neck.
LEFT FRONT With smaller needles and A, cast on 34 (38, 42, 46) sts. Work in k2, p2 rib for 8 rows. With larger needles, work in St st until piece measures 23½ (23½, 23½, 24)" from beg; end with WS row completed.
Shape neck and shoulder Dec Row Work to last 3 sts, ssk, k 1. Repeat decrease row every other row 1 (1, 2, 2) times more, then every 4th row 10 (11, 11, 11) times. When front measures 32½ (33, 33½, 34)" from beg, shape shoulders beg at armhole edge as follows: Bind off 7 (7, 9,10) sts at beg of next row. Work back across row. Bind off 7 (8, 9,11) sts at beg of next row. Work back across row. Bind off rem 8 (10, 10, 11) sts.
RIGHT FRONT
Work as for left front, reversing all shaping.
SLEEVES
With smaller needles and B, cast on 34 (38, 42, 46) sts. Work in k2, p2 Rib for 20 rows. With larger needles and A, work even in St st for 20 rows. Inc row (RS) K 1, M1, work to last st, M1, k 1. Repeat Inc Row every 6th row 11 times more - 58 (62, 66, 70) sts. Work even until St st portion measures 20 1/2 (20 1/2, 21 1/2, 21 1/2)". Bind off.
COLLAR/FRONT BAND
Sew shoulder seams. Beg Band at bottom edge of Right Front. With B, RS facing and circular needles, pick up 143 (145, 147, 149) sts to center of Back Neck, place marker, pick up 143 (145, 147, 149) sts to bottom edge. (Tip Pick up 3 sts to every 4 rows at front edges and all sts from Back Neck.)
Shape collar
Place markers at beg of Front Neck shaping. Row 1 (WS) Beg with p2, work in k2, p2 Rib to center Back Neck marker, slip marker, work 21 sts in rib, turn. Row 2 (RS) Keeping pattern in Rib, work 42 sts, turn. Row 3 (WS) Work 2 more sts than last row, turn. Repeat last row until all sts between Front Neck markers are worked. Next row Cont in Rib to bottom edge. Work evenly in Rib on 286 (290, 294, 298) sts until front band measures 3". Bind off in rib.
FINISHING
Place markers on front and back 9 (9 1/2, 10, 10 1/2)" down from shoulders. Sew sleeves between markers. Sew sleeve seams, beginning at cuffs (being sure to sew on RS for cuffs), and side seams. Turn cuff to right side. Weave in loose ends.
HAT
With smaller needles and A, cast on 66 sts. Work in k2, p2 Rib for 10 rows. With larger needles and B, work even in St st for 20 rows Change to A. Dec Row 1 (RS) (k2 tog, k 9) 6 times - 60 sts.

Purl.
Row 3
(K2tog, k 8) 6 times. P 1 row - 54 sts. Row 5 (K2tog, k 7) 6 times. P 1 row - 48 sts. Row 7 (K2tog, k 6) 6 times. P 1 row - 42 sts. Row 9 (K2tog, k 5) 6 times. P 1 row - 36 sts. Row 11 (K2tog, k 4) 6 times. P 1 row - 30 sts. Row 13 (K2tog, k 3) 6 times. P 1 row - 24 sts. Row 15 (K2tog, k 2) 6 times. P 1 row - 18 sts. Row 17 (K2tog, k 1) 6 times. P 1 row - 12 sts. Row 19 (Last Row) K2tog 6 times - 6 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a long end for sewing. Pull yarn through sts on needle and draw tog tightly. Sew back seam (being sure to work on RS for cuff). Turn ribbed cuff to right side. Weave in loose ends.

Extremly heavy garment. Although I followed the directions & my stitch gauge was perfect, the sleeves came out way too long. In sewing up the garment, the yarn kept splitting, I would never use Homespun again for anything other than an Afghan or a hat or scarf -- nothing that involved sewing up seams. Since I have some black Homespun, I am going to make the hat with fun fur added, and on either a circular or on four needles. I never wore the sweater, but gave it to one of our Catholic charities here in Great Falls, Montana.
