GAUGE:

9 sts and 18 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch (knit every row) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Diagonal Pattern Baby Blanket Reviewed by Jane Arnold on 2015-03-21 *****
I have made dozens of these blankets over the years and still have none for myself! I use seven skeins to make an "adult" version on either size 10 or 10.5 needles depending on how large (big for my adult sons) I want the blanket to be. I use three skeins for each half (increase then decrease halves) and use the seventh to crochet a simple edging or a fancy one for little girls. I also weave ribbon through the holes for little princesses! The yarn is not fancy but wears and washes beautifully. I do have a lot of the seventh skeins left after making a number of blankets and use them up making striped blankets, which are often the favorites.
