14 sts + 20 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

HEM - Cast on 24 sts. Purl 1 row. Inc Row 1 (RS) (Knit into front and back of next st twice, k to last 2 sts, (knit into back and front of next st) twice – 28 sts. Repeat Inc Row every other row 4 more times – 44 sts. Next Row Cast on 13 sts, purl across – 57 sts. Next Row Cast on 13 sts, knit across – 70 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist. Work even in St st for an additional 1 1/4" [3 cm]. Bind off very loosely.

CAP - Work as for Hem until piece is joined in the rnd. Work even in St st for an additional 5 1/2 inches [14 cm]. Crown Decreases (Note Change to double-pointed needles when sts no longer fit on circular needle.) Rnd 1 *K 5, k2tog; repeat from * around – 60 sts. Rnd 2 *K 4, k2tog; repeat from * around – 50 sts. Rnd 3 *K 3, k2tog; repeat from * around – 40 sts. Rnd 4 *K 2, k2tog; repeat from * around – 30 sts. Rnd 5 *K 1, k2tog; repeat from * around – 20 sts. Rnd 6 (K2tog) around – 10 sts. Rnd 7 (K2tog) around – 5 sts.

FINISHING - Break yarn, leaving a 6 inches [15 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining 5 sts; draw sts together and fasten. Sew Hem Place Hem inside Cap with wrong sides together, matching shaping of brim along edges. Whipstitch edges of Cap and Hem together. Whipstitch cast-on edge of Hem to inside of Cap. Weave in ends.

Cut approximately 40 strands of Incredible, each about 5 inches [12.5 cm] long and lay carefully together on a flat surface. Cut another strand about 12 inches [30.5 cm] long, slide under the center of bundle of shorter strands and tie them together securely, knotting twice. Use long ends to sew or tie pompom onto Cap. With large-eyed, blunt needle and Incredible, sew a running stitch just above hem, beginning and ending at pompom.

The reviewer who says its not easy is wrong. Maybe she just wasn't ready. Everyone learns differently. I've met new knitters who have made socks and I've knit for many years and NEVER made socks. I want to relax when I knit. Not stress.
Advice - try to move up in your skill set. But never knit or do any HOBBY that's out of your comfortable skill set. So, read through a pattern and check your comfort level before buying yarn and starting a project. If you bought the yarn first... Save it. Later you can come back here and find a use for it.
I have a knitting group and I tell many of my new knitters to not try bouclé type yarn for a while. Homespun is probably the most common bouclé yarn in the USA thanks to Lion Brand and the wide array of colors they offer.
I'd say the yarn isn't easy. It's not the pattern. Try a garter stitch scarf in HomeSpun first or save it for a few years.
