GAUGE:

14 sts + 20 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

HEM - Cast on 24 sts. Purl 1 row.
Inc Row 1 (RS)
(Knit into front and back of next st twice, k to last 2 sts, (knit into back and front of next st) twice – 28 sts. Repeat Inc Row every other row 4 more times – 44 sts.
Next Row
Cast on 13 sts, purl across – 57 sts.
Next Row
Cast on 13 sts, knit across – 70 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist. Work even in St st for an additional 1 1/4" [3 cm]. Bind off very loosely.

CAP - Work as for Hem until piece is joined in the rnd. Work even in St st for an additional 5½ inches [14 cm].
Crown Decreases (Note
Change to double-pointed needles when sts no longer fit on circular needle.)
Rnd 1
*K 5, k2tog; repeat from * around – 60 sts.
Rnd 2
*K 4, k2tog; repeat from * around – 50 sts.
Rnd 3
*K 3, k2tog; repeat from * around – 40 sts.
Rnd 4
*K 2, k2tog; repeat from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 5
*K 1, k2tog; repeat from * around – 20 sts.
Rnd 6
(K2tog) around – 10 sts.
Rnd 7
(K2tog) around – 5 sts.

FINISHING - Break yarn, leaving a 6 inches [15 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining 5 sts; draw sts together and fasten.
Sew Hem
Place Hem inside Cap with wrong sides together, matching shaping of brim along edges. Whipstitch edges of Cap and Hem together. Whipstitch cast-on edge of Hem to inside of Cap. Weave in ends.

TRIM
Mark center of button arrangement and sew largest button in place. Sew remaining buttons around center as desired.

All Buttoned Up Decorated Cap Reviewed by Nancy Hrobar on 2008-02-29 *****
This yarn is fabulous and made in America!!!!!!!!I am now making a scarf out of it to match. I used the red and am embellishing with purple for red hat festivities. What a great pattern and so hefty. Makes for a great trendy shape.
