GAUGE:

12 sts + 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Americana Hat & Scarf Reviewed by Chris Dykstra on 2012-01-04 *
I attempted to make the hat and it was an epic fail. The adult hat is HUGE! I don't know who has a head big enough for this hat and I even cast on 9 less stitches than the pattern called for. Also, when doing the crown shaping, the number of stitches at the end of the row does not match the pattern. There are either extra stitches that do not allow you to end with a knit 1 or you end up with extra which you then have to decrease out in the next row by k2tog.
