GAUGE:

14 St sts = 4 inches on #10 needle BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
Sl 2 kwise-k1-p2sso
Slip 2 stitches together knitwise (as though to knit), knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch = centered double decrease.

HAT
Using smaller needles, loosely cast on 70 sts. Place marker to indicate beg of rnd.

Rnds 1-7 K1, p1 rib.
Rnd 8
* K2, M1 , rep from * across the rnd (105 sts).
Rnd 9
Change to larger needles and work in St st for 3½ inches.
Crown
Decrease as follows (change to DPN’s when necessary):

With larger needles, cast on 29 sts.
Row 1
Working back and forth, k1, *p1, k1; rep from *.
Repeat Row 1 for 76 inches. Bind off.
Finishing
Laying scarf flat, fold up 8 inches on each side to form pockets. Sew sides in place invisibly.
