GAUGE:

16 sts + 24 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k on right side, p on wrong side) with 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:

2 strands of yarn are held together throughout.

HEADPIECE

With 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 8 sts. Work in St st until piece measures length of headband. Bind off all sts. Sew cover over headband, making seam at inside center and closing ends.

HORNS – Make 2

With 2 strands of yarn held tog and double-pointed needles, cast on 15 sts, dividing sts evenly on 3 needles. Working in rnds, knit 3 rnds.

[Ssk, k 3] 3 times – 12 sts. Knit 2 rnds.

[Ssk, k 2] 3 times – 9 sts. Knit 2 rnds.

[Ssk, k 1] 3 times – 6 sts. Knit 2 rnds.

[Ssk] 3 times – 3 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Run yarn through remaining 3 sts, gather tightly and fasten securely. Weave in ends. Stuff horns lightly with polyfil. Sew Horns to top of headband.

TAIL

With 2 strands of yarn held tog and double-pointed needles, cast on 4 sts. K 4. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work. (Do not turn work.) Repeat from * until tail measures 25 inches [63.5 cm] from beginning, or desired length.

Belt Loop Work back and forth on 4 sts in Garter st (k every row) until Garter st section measures 5½ inches [14 cm]. Bind off all sts. Fold Belt Loop over and sew last row to first row to form loop.

POINT – Make 2

With 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 12 sts. Knit 2 rows. K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. Knit 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows until 2 sts remain. K2tog. Pull yarn through remaining st and fasten securely. Sew both Points tog, stuffing slightly and attaching securely to end of tail. Weave in ends.

I used this pattern to make the "tail".( I had a different one for the "horns").I wore this costume to a halloween party at a local nursing home. The residents and nurses thought it was so neat that I had knit a costume. They all loved it and so did the kids and parents that came to the party.
