Pocket Pet: Skunk
Lion Brand® Fun Fur®
GAUGE: 24 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SKUNK
With A, cast on 20 stitches. Row 1-3 Work in garter stitch (all knit). Need a little help on how to knit? Use our handy learn-to-knit instructions for detailed pictures and instructions! | | Change to B.
Here is how: Cut the old yarn, leaving a tail of at least 4 inches. Loosely tie a knot with the new yarn (A) around the old yarn (B), leaving a tail of a least 4 inches. Slide the knot up the tail of the old yarn as close as possible to your work. Pull tight. When you turn your work and start the next row, knit with the loose ends of the yarn as will as the main strand of B until the ends are used up. Yes -- you are knitting with 3 strands for a short time. Because this piece is made of furry yarn this won't show or cause a problem. Rows 4 - 22: With B, knit in Garter stitch (all knit).
Row 23: Knit 20 stitches. Cast on an additional 40 stitches for a total of 60 stitches Row 24: Knit 60 stitches. Row 25: Knit 20 stitches in B, change to A, knit 40 stitches. Note: On this change, do not cut B, simply tie on A and start knitting with A. This is because you will need to switch back to B in the next row. You can knit double with the short loose end of A until it is used up -- it won't show because this is fun fur. Row 26: Knit 40 stitches in A. You will be at the point where you stopped using B in the last row. Change to B by knitting one stitch using both A and B and then continuing in B. Row 27: Knit 20 stitches in B. Change to A by knitting one stitch using both B and A and then continuing in A to the end of the row. Row 28: Knit 40 stitches in A. You will be at the point where you stopped using B in the last row. Change to B by knitting one stitch using both A and B and then continuing in B. Row 39: Still with B, knit 20 stitches. Cut A to a 3 inch length and knit with A and B until the end of A is used up (this avoids a trailing end) and until B reaches the end of the row. Row 30: knit, bind off all stitches. | The piece will be square, about 3.5 inches [approximately 9 cm] with a tail as shown. There is a white stripe on one edge of the piece and another stripe on the tail. | | Fold square as shown and stitch closed. | | | Turn the fabric and open it -- it will be a cone. Put the stuffing into it. Position stuffing with your finger to make the Skunk the shape you'd like (you can always adjust this later, as well) | | | Fold down the flap at the top of the cone, aligning the pieces so the stripe on the tail meets the stripe on the body. Sew the open edges closed. | | | To add eyes, pull the crochet hook all the way through the 'head' and use it to pull the black and white yarn through together. Tie the two yarns securely on one end (use several knots). Pull the two yarns tight and tie off on the other end (use several knots). Trim closely.

| Very difficult sewing black on this fuzzy yarn. I made many mistakes and had a lot of re-dos, but when finally finished it was very cute.
