Hood With Scarf

Lion Brand® Fun Fur®

GAUGE:

9 sts + 17 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Garter st (k every row) with 2 strands of yarn held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

M1 (make 1 st) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

SCARF

With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 20 sts. Work in Garter st for 8 inches [20.5 cm].

Eyelet Row (K 1, k2tog, yo) 6 times, k 2.

Work even in Garter st until piece measures 36 inches [91.5 cm] from beginning. Work Eyelet Row once more. Work in Garter st until piece measures 44 inches [112 cm]. Bind off all sts.

HOOD

With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 52 sts. K 22, pm, k 8, pm, k 22. Knit 4 rows.

Increase Row K to marker, M1, sm, k to next marker, sm, M1, k to end of row – 2 sts increased.

Repeat last 5 rows 2 more times – 58 sts. Knit 16 rows.

Decrease Row K to 2 sts before marker, ssk, k to next marker, sm, k2tog, k to end of row.

Knit 3 rows. Repeat last 4 rows 4 more times; repeat Decrease row once more – 46 sts. Bind off.

TIES
(Make 2)
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 4 sts. Work in Garter st for 23 inches [58.5 cm]. Bind off all sts, leaving a 6 inches [15 cm] tail.

FINISHING

Center cast-on edge of Hood onto one long edge of scarf 12 inches [30.5 cm] from each end. Sew invisibly in place. Fold Hood in half and sew seam at top of Hood. Thread Ties through eyelet rows and attach end securely to lower edge of Scarf. Weave in ends.

Hood With Scarf Reviewed by Kathy Woodworth on 2009-12-09 *****
I made this with a few modifications as well. I used 1 strand of homespun on size 13 needles. I did a basic garter stitch scarf, and the hood I made with a border of 5 garter stitches at the beginning and end and stockinette stitch for the body. The body of the hood was slightly long (I knit an additional 16 rows where it said "knit 16". They meant "you just knit 16 after you complete the repeats".... Doh!) but it's warm and snuggly! I just folded the scarf over the base of the hood to take up the slack. Love this pattern! I'll definitely make it again.
