Hood With Scarf

Lion Brand® Fun Fur

GAUGE:

9 sts + 17 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Garter st (k every row) with 2 strands of yarn held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

M1 (make 1 st) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

SCARF

With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 20 sts. Work in Garter st for 8 inches [20.5 cm].

Eyelet Row (K 1, k2tog, yo) 6 times, k 2.

Work even in Garter st until piece measures 36 inches [91.5 cm] from beginning. Work Eyelet Row once more. Work in Garter st until piece measures 44 inches [112 cm]. Bind off all sts.

HOOD

With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 52 sts. K 22, pm, k 8, pm, k 22. Knit 4 rows.

Increase Row K to marker, M1, sm, k to next marker, sm, M1, k to end of row – 2 sts increased.

Repeat last 5 rows 2 more times – 58 sts. Knit 16 rows.

Decrease Row K to 2 sts before marker, ssk, k to next marker, sm, k2tog, k to end of row.

Knit 3 rows. Repeat last 4 rows 4 more times; repeat Decrease row once more – 46 sts. Bind off.

TIES
(Make 2)

FINISHING

Center cast-on edge of Hood onto one long edge of scarf 12 inches [30.5 cm] from each end. Sew invisibly in place. Fold Hood in half and sew seam at top of Hood. Thread Ties through eyelet rows and attach end securely to lower edge of Scarf. Weave in ends.

Hood With Scarf Reviewed by tjensen on 2008-12-11 *****
We're not real big on hats here - it's a hair-thing - but hooded scarves are great. I made this as a gift with 2 strands of Homespun (Ocean & Windsor) on 13s, in stocking stitch instead of garter stitch. I tried it with 11s but it was a bit stiffer than I wanted. I made a "length-wise" scarf in plain old stocking stitch. After sewing the pieces together I came back & single-crocheted a couple of rows around the outside edges of scarf & hood to keep everything from curling. Super-easy & fast. My friend gets tons of comments & I've had several requests for more, in different Homespun color-combinations.
