GAUGE:

12 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS for Scarf, k every round for Hat) with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT
With smaller circular needles, cast on 60 sts. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist sts.
*Work 6 rnds Reverse St st (purl all rnds).
Work 4 rnds of St st.
Change to larger circular needles and repeat from * 2 times more.
Work 6 rnds of Reverse St st – 36 rnds worked.

Shape Crown
Note Change to dpns as necessary.
Rnd 1 *K 8, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 54 sts.
Rnds 2 and 4 Knit.
Rnd 3 *K 7, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 48 sts.
Rnd 5 *P 6, p2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 42 sts.
Rnds 6, 8 and 10 Purl.
Rnd 7 *P 5, p2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 36 sts.
Rnd 9 *P 4, p2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 30 sts.
Rnd 11 *K 3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 24 sts.
Rnds 12 and 14 Knit.
Rnd 13 *K 2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 18 sts.
Rnd 15 *P 1, p2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 12 sts.
Rnd 16 Purl.
Rnd 17 *P2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd – 6 sts.

Cut yarn and run tail through remaining sts. Fasten off.

SCARF

With larger needles, cast on 20 sts.

**Work 6 rows of Reverse St st (p on RS rows, k on WS rows.

Work 4 rows of St st.

Repeat from ** until piece measures approximately 66 inches.

Bind off and weave in ends.
