12 sts + 16 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS)
12 sts + 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Garter St (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

1. When working in Garter St, slip the first st of each row for a smooth edge.
For ease in working, circle numbers that pertain to your size.

Cast on 58 (64, 70, 76, 82, 88) sts. Work 5 rows in Garter st. Next row (WS) Work 3 sts in Garter st, work in St st to last 3 sts, work 3 sts in Garter st. Cont in this way for 18 rows from beg. Decrease row (RS) Slip 1, k 1, ssk, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k 2. Repeat dec every other row 5 (7, 7, 8, 10, 12) times more - 38 (40, 44, 46, 48, 50) sts. Work in this way until armhole measures 7 (7˝, 8, 8˝, 9, 9 ˝ )", ending after a WS row. Shoulder and Back neck shaping: Next row (RS) Slip 1, k 9 (10, 11, 12, 12, 13), turn. Work these 10 (11, 12, 13, 13, 14) sts until armhole measures 8 (8˝, 9, 9˝, 10, 10˝)". Bind off. Join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 18 (18, 20, 20, 22, 22) sts, k to end. Denim Vest Reviewed by Diana Elkin on 2013-01-02 ****
Pleased with this vest overall.... however, I did "Tweak" the pattern to suit my personal taste ..... I omitted the "Side splits" & knitted the garment 17" long before armhole cast off. I also found the shoulders too narrow for my taste, instead of ending with 11 sts I worked less decreases on armhole edging, leaving 18 sts. thus giving me "wider" shoulders which suited me better.. I will knit it again, maybe leaving in the "side splits" next time!
