GAUGE: 8 sts + 16 rows = 4" (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: PATTERN STITCHES Seed Stitch Pat (worked back and forth on straight needles) Row 1 *K 1, p 1; rep from * across, end k 1. Rep Row 1 for Seed St Pat. Seed Stitch Pat (worked in-the-rnd on circular needles) Rnd 1 *K 1, p 1; rep from * around. Rnd 2 *P 1, k 1; rep from * around. Rep Rnds 1 & 2 for Seed St Pat. |

BACK
With straight knitting needles, cast on 35 (39, 43) sts. Work back and forth in Seed St for 14". Shape armholes Keeping to pat, dec 1 st each end every other row 3 times -- 29 (33, 37) sts. Cont in Seed St, slipping the first st of every row until armholes measure 5". Shape neck: Next row Keeping to pat, work 11 (13, 15) sts, join new ball of yarn and work center 7 sts and place on a holder for neck, work rem sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, keeping to pat bind off at each neck edge at beg of every other row 3 sts once, then 2 sts once, then 1 st once -- 5 (7, 9) sts rem each side. Work even in Seed St until armholes measure 8¾ (9, 9¼)". Bind off. FRONT
Work same as Back. FINISHING
Weave Front and Back at shoulders so that seams lay flat. Neckband With RS facing, using circular needles, starting at right shoulder seam, pick up and k 66 (68, 70) sts evenly spaced around neck edge. Work around in Seed St for 1". Dec rnd Keeping to pat dec 4 sts (work 3tog 2 times) evenly spaced on Front and dec 4 sts in same manner evenly spaced on Back -- 8 sts dec total. Cont to dec 4 sts on Front and 4 sts on Back in same manner as previous dec rnd when neck edge is 2", then 3" and then 4". Bind off rem sts. Weave side seams. |
