10 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with MC When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With MC, cast on 28 sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 8 inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

First Half Knit 7 sts, place remaining 21 sts onto stitch holder. Work 5 more rows in St st. (K 2, k2tog, turn. P 3, turn) 4 times. Place remaining 3 sts onto a stitch holder.

Second Half Knit 7 sts at end of row from stitch holder, leaving 14 center sts on holder. Work 6 more rows St st. (P 2, p2tog, turn. K 3, turn) 3 times, (p 2, p2tog) once. Place remaining 3 sts onto stitch holder.

With RS facing, k across first 3 heel sts from holder, pick up and knit 4 sts along side of heel; knit center 14 sts from holder; pick up and knit 4 sts along side of second half of heel, k remaining 3 sts from holder – 28 sts.

Dec Row K 7, k2tog, k 10, k2tog, k 7 – 26 sts.

Work even in St st until Foot measures 4 inches.

First Half Knit 13 sts; place remaining 13 sts onto stitch holder for second half of toe. Continue in St st, dec 1 st at each end of every RS row until 3 sts remain. Bind off as if to purl.

Second half Knit 13 sts from holder. Work as for first half of toe.

Divide CC into 3 equal balls. With WS facing and 3 strands of CC held tog, from inside of cast on edge, pick up and knit 28 sts. Knit 14 rows. Bind off loosely.

Sew back seam. Sew foot and toe seams. Fold cuff to RS at halfway point.

Hanging Cord With crochet hook, attach MC to back seam at cuff fold. Chain 12, slip st to attaching space. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Fur-cuffed Santa Stocking Reviewed by Marina Calarco on 2013-11-01 ****
I used hometown yarn instead of the suggested yarn since it had been discontinued. This worked up very fast only took a few hours, and looks great. I only wish it was a little bigger. Plan on making one for each of my family members.
