GAUGE: 19 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: k1b (knit 1 in the row below) Insert needle through center of st 1 row below next st and knit, slipping st above off needle at same time.
Foundation Row (WS) P 1, *p 1, k 1; rep from * to last st, p 1.
Row 1 (RS) K 1, *p 1, k1b; rep from * to last st, k 1.
Row 2 P 1, *p 1, k 1; rep from * to last st, p 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 for pattern.
Main Pattern (multiple of 7 + 2)
Row 1 (RS) Knit.
Row 2 P 1, *p 1, k 6; rep from * to last st, p 1.
Row 3 K 7, k1b, *k 6, k1b; rep from * to last st, k 1.
Row 4 Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 1-4 for pattern.

HAT
Cast on 72 sts and work 10 rows in Fisherman Rib. Work 4 rows in Garter St, then 30 rows Main Pattern.
Crown Decreases
Row 1 (RS) K 1, *k 2, k2tog, k 2, k1b; rep from * to last st, k 1 – 62 sts.
Row 2 P 1, *p 1, k 5; rep from * to last st, p 1.
Rows 3-12 Main Pattern, adjusting number of sts between k1b/p sts to reflect decreases.
Row 13 K 1, *k 1, k2tog, k 2, k1b; rep from * to last st, k 1 – 52 sts.
Row 14 P 1, *p 1, k 4; rep from * to last st, p 1.
Rows 15-24 Main Pattern, adjusting number of sts between k1b/p sts to reflect decreases.
Row 25 K 1, *k 1, k2tog, k 1, k1b; rep from * to last st, k 1 – 42 sts.
Row 26 P 1, *p 1, k 3; rep from * to last st, p 1.

Break off yarn leaving 18" long end. Pull through rem sts and sew back seam. Make tassel and attach to point. |

I made two versions of this hat. The first one I made like the pattern, and oh boy is it cute. The second one I made, I modified the pattern a bit. I just wanted the ribbing, so I did a regular k1b instead of what the pattern called for and boy, it was just as cute as the first.
Very, very easy. Only took me a few days to make. Also easy to change the sizing too. I used sz 4 needles and it worked well for a smaller hat (still used the baby soft yarn).
This will probably be my go baby gift.
