Cardboard 6" [15 cm] wide for making pompom

BIG Seed Stitch Hat with Pom Pom

Lion Brand® BIG

4 sts + 8 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in seed stitch. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Wind yarn from hank into a ball.

Cast on 19 sts.

Row 1 K 1, (p 1, k 1) across.
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 11½ inches [29 cm] from beginning.
Bind off all sts.

Cut a strip of cardboard 6" [15 cm] wide. Wrap yarn around cardboard – the more wraps, the fuller your pompom will be. Cut yarn leading to skein and carefully slide yarn off cardboard. Cut a long piece of yarn and double it; carefully slide it under the center of the yarn and tie tightly with a double knot. Clip the loops, fluff out your pompom, and trim.

Fold Hat in half and sew side and top seams. Position Hat with side seam at center. Using the tails of the knotted strand, attach pompom to corners at top edge of Hat, working through all layers. Weave in ends.

BIG Seed Stitch Hat with Pom Pom Reviewed by America on 2010-08-07 *****
What a great hat! I just discovered Lion Brand's free patterns today, and when I saw this pattern I knew I had to give it a try! It's whimsical, yet toasty, how fun! The pattern is extremely easy, but I've gotten some compliments for it already! If you're looking for a great project that doesn't take much time, this is it! I made the hat a little less long, but otherwise it's perfect!
