Lion Brand® Homespun®

10 sts x 10 rows= 4 in. [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Knit with 28-inch [71 cm.] Knitting Board set at mid spacing of 1 inch [2.5 cm] with 4 inch [10 cm] bolts.

Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

Cast On 84 Stitches (full 28” board).
Place anchor yarn of 50” in contrasting color, heavy yarn.
Work entire afghan in Stockinette Stitch for a total of 200 rows.

Bind Off very loosely:

Do not cut yarn. Use yarn for the Bind Off. Start bind off at yarn end. Slip crochet hook into (1) loop either board. Wrap yarn around hook and pull thru loop on needle. Pick up next loop (opposite board). Wrap yarn around hook and pull thru both loops on hook. Pick up next loop on opposite board. Wrap yarn around hook and pull through (2) loops. Proceed with this process across the stitches, always alternating with the boards. This bind off process will give you full stretch-ability of the edges of afghan.

Cut yarn.
Once last loop is off the board, do secure knot with tail of yarn and tuck tail into knitting.
Attach yarn to bottom edge at anchor yarn. Do same bind off, and then, remove the anchor yarn.

Each end of afghan has 33 fringes. Each fringe consists of 2 strands of yarn, folded in half, to create 4 strands when completed. Attach with the crochet hook.

Cut 132 strands of yarn approximately 16” long (59 yds of yarn).

When attaching the fringe, start with center of edge of afghan, and then do each end edge. Add next fringe to center of each space created between the fringes. This process will keep the 33 fringes even across the edges of afghan.

Once completed on both ends of afghan, you are complete and it’s ready to throw across the sofa or bed, or wrap up and give a beautiful gift.
