GAUGE:

3.5 stitches and 3.5 rows=1 inch [2.5 cm] When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

Knits up quickly in Stockinette Stitch with easy color changes. The pattern is random stripes of the 2 colors, B and A. At each color change, pick up the next color to work with. It is not necessary to cut the yarn after each change. We will only cut the yarn at the wider stripes.

Uptown Tote Bag
Cast On 78 Stitches in B. Lay anchor yarn of double strand.
This is bottom of bag.

Knit 3 rows in B.
Tie on A yarn. Lay B aside.
Knit 2 rows in A.
Knit 2 rows in B.
Knit 3 rows in A.
Knit 1 row in B.
Knit 2 rows in A. Cut A yarn and knot.
Knit 5 rows in B. Cut B and knot.
Tie in A yarn.
Knit 6 rows in A.
Tie in B yarn.
Knit 3 rows in B. Cut B and knot.
Knit 6 rows in A.
Tie on B yarn.
Knit 4 rows in B.
Knit 2 rows in A.
Knit 3 rows in B.
Bind Off of board using crochet chain. Pick up 3 loops, pull one thru 2.

Strap
Cast On 7 stitches in B. Lay anchor yarn.
Knit until the strap is 22-23 in. [56-58 cm] long.
Bind Off of board.
Roll the strap lengthwise and stitch together to form a long roll. Do this with matching yarn.

Finishing
The anchor yarn is bottom of bag.
Sew the side seams with invisible stitch in matching yarns.
You now have a circular piece. Draw the anchor yarn until the width is about 12 in. [30 cm] across the bottom of bag as compared to the 15 in [38 cm] across the top of bag. Tie the anchor yarn snuggly and allow to remain in the bag.
Sew the bottom edge with invisible stitch with B yarn for a firm bottom of bag.

Adding The Strap
Place the strap inside of bag at each end. Place it into the bag about 1 in. [2.5 cm].
Sew the strap to each side of the inside of bag at bottom of strap, and also, at top edge of bag. This double sewing will give the strap a solid connection for durability.
Your pretty striped bag is ready for use.
