Quick-to-knit raglan with a lush ribbed cowl that will turn heads on and off the slopes. A reverse stockinette stripe set slightly off-center and two pompoms dangling from the cowl add a little pizzazz and keep the knitting exciting. Used with permission of Potter Craft from Knit Three Ways.

Sweatshirt To Soiree

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

GAUGE:

8 sts and 10 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] over St st with larger needles

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Front
With size 11 needles, CO 40 (44, 48, 52) sts. Work in ribbing for 1½ in. [3.8 cm]. Change to size 15 needles. Work pattern as follows:
Row 1: K12, p5, k23 (27, 31, 35) sts.
Row 2: P23 (27, 31, 35), k5, p12 sts.
Work in pattern until piece measures 14 (15, 16, 16) in. [35.5 (38, 40.5 40.5) cm].
Shape Armhole: BO 2 (2, 2, 3) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st at each edge every other row 9 (10, 11, 12) times. Dec all raglans as follows:
Row 1: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Put remaining 18 (20, 22, 22) sts on a holder.
Row 2:Purl.

Back
With size 11 needles, CO 40 (44, 48, 52) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1½ in. [3.8 cm]. Change to size 15 needles and St st until piece measures 14 (15, 16, 16) in. [35.5 (38, 40.5, 40.5) cm].
Shape Armhole:BO 2 (2, 2, 3) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st at each edge every other row 9 (10, 11, 12) times. Put remaining 18 (20, 22, 22) sts on a holder.

Sleeves
With size 11 needles, CO 18 (18, 18, 20) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1½ in. [3.8 cm]. Change to size 15 needles and St st. At the same time, inc 1 st at each end every 6th row 5 (6, 6, 7) times. (Note: For better seams, work incs 2 sts in from edges.) Work even until piece measures 16 (16½, 16½, 17) in. [40.5 (42, 42, 43) cm].
Shape Cap:BO 2 (2, 2, 3) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st at each edge every other row 9 (10, 11, 12) times. Put remaining 6 (6, 4, 4) sts on a holder.

Finishing
Sew raglan and side seams.
Neck Band: With size 11 circular needles, knit the 18 (20, 22, 22) sts on front holder, the 6 (6, 4, 4) sts on sleeve holder, the 18 (20, 22, 22) sts on back holder, and the 6 (6, 4, 4) sts on sleeve holder. Dec 1 st at each of the four raglan seams (knit the last st of one to the first st of the other piece you have sewn), for 44 (48, 48, 48) sts around neck edge. Join and work in k1, p1 ribbing for 3 in. [7.5 cm], keeping the 5 sts in rev St that you did up the front. Then change to size 15 needles. Keep in k1, p1 rib, changing the 5 rev St sts to St st so the purl side shows when folded over. Continue until piece measures 8 in. [20.5 cm]. BO all sts loosely. With a single strand of yarn, lace up the front reverse St st pattern on the collar and make two pompoms.

Sweatshirt To Soiree Reviewed by Cynthia on 2013-01-16 **
Nice sweater if you like a turtle neck and not a cowl neck as shown. I too had it turn out tighter than shown, even making adjustments for arm length and chest increase for a loose fit on a very tiny and petit young lady. Fine for a very plain look, otherwise very disappointed.
