Striped Footies
Lion Brand® Lion® Wool
GAUGE: 24 stitches + 36 rows = 4" [10 cm] BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: These socks are striped in a 6-row repeat with an afterthought heel.

Cuff
With A, cast on 44 stitches. Join, being careful not to twist, and place marker to indicate beginning of round. Distribute stitches so that there are 11 stitches per needle. Work in knit 2, purl 2 rib for 4 rounds.
Rounds 5-6 Work in stockinette.
Rounds 7-9 Switch to B. Knit 3 rows.
Place heel
Round 10 Knit across 22 stitches using waste yarn. You will be coming back later to "unzip" these stitches and work the heel. After knitting in waste yarn, return to beginning of round and knit across the placeholder stitches with B.
Rounds 12-13 Knit with B before switching back to A.
Foot
Continue knitting foot, alternating colors every 6 rounds, until sock measures approximately 1 ¾" [4.5 cm] shorter than the intended length from the waste yarn to the end. (Sample shows 4 full stripes of each color.)
Shape toe
Round 1 On needle 1, knit 1, slip slip knit, knit across. On needle 2, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1. On needle 3, knit 1, slip slip knit, knit across. On needle 4, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1.
Round 2 Knit to end of round.
Using A, alternate these 2 rounds until there are 6 stitches on each needle, and then repeat round 1 only until only 3 stitches remain on each needle.
Graft remaining stitches using Kitchener stitch.
Heel
Round 1 Using 4 needles and distributing stitches evenly, carefully pick up each stitch above and below your waste yarn. There will be one more stitch on one side than the other. Pick out the waste yarn row. You should now have 2 needles with stitches above and below a long hole in your knitting. Beginning with B, knit all stitches, picking up and knitting 2 stitches in each gap at the ends of the slit.
Round 2 Decrease evenly around to bring your stitch count to 48 stitches. Arrange stitches so that there are 12 stitches on each needle, and the side corners of the heel line up evenly with the sides of the toe.
Round 3 Knit to end of round.
Round 4 Switch to A. On needle 1, knit 1, slip slip knit, knit across. On needle 2, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1. On needle 3, knit 1, slip slip knit, knit across. On needle 4, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1.
Rounds 5 Knit.
Continue working these 2 rounds until 16 stitches remain. Graft the final 16 stitches using Kitchener stitch.
Weave in ends, wash, and block.

| This pattern is a little hard to understand at first. Once I figured it out it worked great! I have knit 3 pairs of these socks now and everyone that has them loves them.
