Free Knitting Pattern: Midwestern Mittens, Extra Chunky

Lion Brand® Landscapes®(old)
Pattern #: cws-mittens
Nothing’s cozier than mittens, especially these woolly wonders. This cinchy pattern is a great way to break into double-pointed needles for the first time. A few pointers: Dividing the stitches unevenly after casting on will make for easier ribbing. Note that whenever you’re told to cast on or work a number of stitches, the first number is for smaller/girly hands and the number in parentheses is for larger/guyer hands. (But not your boyfriend’s hands. Knit for your sweetie at your own risk.)

Midwestern Mittens, Extra Chunky

Lion Brand® Landscapes®(old)

GAUGE:

12 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in the round When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

MITTENS (make two)
Cast on 20 (22) stitches.

SM/MED divide as follows: 6 st on first DPN, 4 on second, 6 on third, 4 on fourth.
MED/LG divide as follows: 6 st on first, 6 on second, 6 on third, 4 on fourth.

Work 6 rounds in K1, P1 ribbing. Work additional rounds, as desired, for a longer cuff.

Round 7: Increase round. Switch to stockinette (knit every stitch). Work first needle even. Second needle, M1 stitch, work even. Third needle work even. Fourth needle M1 (M2), work even. 22 (24) stitches total.

THUMB INCREASES
Rnd 8: Begin increasing for thumb gusset. In first needle knit the front and back of the first stitch, place marker, knit into the front and back of second stitch. K around. Knit two rounds even.
Rnd 11: Increase round. Knit into the front and back of first stitch, k1, slip marker, k1, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. K around. Knit two rounds even.
Rnd 14: Increase round. Knit into the front and back of first stitch, k2, slip marker, k2, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. K around. Knit two rounds even.
Slip the first eight stitches on needle 1 onto the stitch holder or piece of scrap yarn. These will become the thumb later on!

HAND
CO 2 onto the empty needle. Begin knitting with the 4 stitches on needle 1. K even until the stockinette portion of the mitten measures approximately 5 inches (measure from the end of the cuff). Put the mitten on to check the sizing, especially if your hand is very small or very big. You are ready to begin the decreases when the mitten is at the tips of your ring and first fingers.

DECREASE
Rnd 1:
Needle 1: K2tog, k4; Needle 2: K5 (k2tog, k4); Needle 3: K2tog, k4; Needle 4: K5 (k2tog, k4)
Rnd 2: K even.
Rnd 3: *K2tog, k3*, repeat * * around.
Rnd 4: K even.
Rnd 5: *K2tog, k2*, repeat * * around.
Rnd 6: K2tog, k2, repeat around.
Rnd 7: K2tog, k1, repeat around.
Rnd 8: K2tog around.
Break yarn and thread through loops, pulling tight on the inside, and weave ends in.

THUMB
Put the thumb stitches on the needles as follows: 3 st on needle 1, 3 st on needle 2, 2 st on needle 3. Using needle 3, pick up 2 st from the cast-on stitches from the thumb. 10 stitches total.

TIP: To avoid holes, twist the stitches before and after the cast-on stitches in the first round by knitting into the back of the stitch.

Knit 6-7 rounds even.
Begin decreases:

Rnd 1: Needle 1: K2tog, k1; Needle 2: K2tog, k1; Needle 3: K2tog, k2tog.
Rnd 2: K2tog around.

Break yarn, thread through stitches, pulling tight.

Weave in all ends

Midwestern Mittens, Extra Chunky Reviewed by Chelsea Case on 2012-09-10 *****
I am a big fan of chunky yarn and I love this pattern. I would call myself a beginner/intermediate knitter and this was my second pair of mittens that I have made. I love how they turned out. They will be super warm for this coming winter!
