MITTENS (make two)
Cast on 20 (22) stitches.
SM/MED divide as follows: 6 st on first DPN, 4 on second, 6 on third, 4 on fourth.
MED/LG divide as follows: 6 st on first, 6 on second, 6 on third, 4 on fourth.
Work 6 rounds in K1, P1 ribbing. Work additional rounds, as desired, for a longer cuff.
Round 7: Increase round. Switch to stockinette (knit every stitch). Work first needle even.
Second needle, M1 stitch, work even. Third needle work even. Fourth needle M1 (M2), work even. 22
(24) stitches total.
THUMB INCREASES
Rnd 8: Begin increasing for thumb gusset. In first needle knit the front and back of the
first stitch, place marker, knit into the front and back of second stitch. K around. Knit two rounds
even.
Rnd 11: Increase round. Knit into the front and back of first stitch, k1, slip marker, k1,
knit into the front and back of the next stitch. K around. Knit two rounds even.
Rnd 14: Increase round. Knit into the front and back of first stitch, k2, slip marker, k2,
knit into the front and back of the next stitch. K around. Knit two rounds even.
Slip the first eight stitches on needle 1 onto the stitch holder or piece of scrap yarn. These will
become the thumb later on!
HAND
CO 2 onto the empty needle. Begin knitting with the 4 stitches on needle 1. K even until the
stockinette portion of the mitten measures approximately 5 inches (measure from the end of the
cuff). Put the mitten on to check the sizing, especially if your hand is very small or very big. You
are ready to begin the decreases when the mitten is at the tips of your ring and first fingers.
DECREASE
Rnd 1: Needle 1: K2tog, k4; Needle 2: K5 (k2tog, k4); Needle 3: K2tog, k4; Needle 4: K5 (k2tog,
k4)
Rnd 2: K even.
Rnd 3: *K2tog, k3*, repeat * * around.
Rnd 4: K even.
Rnd 5: *K2tog, k2*, repeat * * around.
Rnd 6: K2tog, k2, repeat around.
Rnd 7: K2tog, k1, repeat around.
Rnd 8: K2tog around.
Break yarn and thread through loops, pulling tight on the inside, and weave ends in.
THUMB
Put the thumb stitches on the needles as follows: 3 st on needle 1, 3 st on needle 2, 2 st on
needle 3. Using needle 3, pick up 2 st from the cast-on stitches from the thumb. 10 stitches total.
TIP: To avoid holes, twist the stitches before and after the cast-on stitches in the first round
by knitting into the back of the stitch.
Knit 6-7 rounds even.
Begin decreases:
Rnd 1: Needle 1: K2tog, k1; Needle 2: K2tog, k1; Needle 3: K2tog, k2tog.
Rnd 2: K2tog around.
Break yarn, thread through stitches, pulling tight.
Weave in all ends
