4 reps = 5 inches (12.75 cm) with size I hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

One- & Two-ball hooded scarves Reviewed by Carole Morton on 2014-12-02 *****
I'm making this scarf for myself, in Homespun Barley and heather colors (purples-blues-greens-wine)can't remember the yarn color, tho? :/ And using an "I" hook. But I love this pattern and how quickly it works up. It's going to take a little more than 2 skeins of yarn (only about 2 more rows to finish, counting the edging), since I crochet a little bigger/looser?
This pattern is really easy to learn, too, so is a good one for beginners.
